Two 4-H’ers from Garfield County were recognized in August for outstanding achievement during the 97th State 4-H Roundup on the Oklahoma State University campus.

Natalie Haggard, of Enid, was given the Enid News & Eagle award, which is presented to 4-H’ers in the northwest district based on overall 4-H achievement. She will next be recognized at the Northwest District Junior Livestock Show in Enid.

Haggard also was selected to be a 4-H state ambassador and will promote 4-H across the state this year, in addition to being selected as a delegate to National Congress and representing Oklahoma in November.

Daughter of Tim and Earla Haggard, Haggard has been an active 4-H’er for six years and is a member of Kremlin-Hillsdale 4-H Club, with main project areas being fabrics and fashion, shooting sports, leadership and citizenship. She was instrumental in starting a community service project focusing on delivering toiletry bags to those in need in her community, according to a release.

“For the past three years I’ve served as the county Cloverbud leader. I’m very proud to see these young members grow and mature in 4-H,” Haggard said.

Montell Meyer, of Nash, was awarded the $1,000 Dorris and Allan Goodbary Scholarship, which is sponsored by the Goodbary family. Meyer also earned the $2,500 Oklahoma 4-H Jakie Jones Scholarship, sponsored by the Jakie Jones Endowment. He also got a $1,500 scholarship on behalf of the Tulsa State Fair.

Son of Matt and Lara Meyer, Meyer has been in 4-H for nine years and is a member of Oklahoma Bible Academy 4-H Club, with his main project areas including agriculture, beef, horse and shooting sports.

His favorite community service project was Stamp Out Starvation, a meals packaging organization serving the hungry mostly in Haiti. He’s been able to organize groups and package more than 194,000 meals, according to the release.

“The leadership opportunities have helped me become more comfortable in front of others. I’ve learned to oversee activities and create events for younger 4-H members,” Meyer said.

“I’ve also learned how to organize and prepare ahead of time and how to transition from one project area to another, sometimes at a moment’s notice.”
