“I miss seeing Ricky host the Globes!” That’s how a whopping 89% of Gold Derby readers voted in our recent poll that asked whether four-time Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais should return to host the 2019 ceremony. It’s been three years since Gervais last graced the stage, as NBC’s late-night stars Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers hosted in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Rounding out the results of our poll, 6% of readers voted “MAYBE — I’ll have to think about it more” while 5% of haters said “NO — Ricky was way too mean.”
For many decades the Hollywood Foreign Press Association opted not to have a host, with John Larroquette and Janine Turner serving as the first official emcees at the 52nd ceremony in 1995. Then 15 years later Gervais was asked to be the first-ever solo host at the 67th ceremony, and there’s been one every year since. Gervais hosted from 2010 to 2012 and then again in 2016; Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted together from 2013 to 2015; and most recently there was Fallon (2017) and Meyers (2018).
The last time Gervais served as ringleader he took a swipe at NBC’s lack of Golden Globe noms, saying, “It’s right that NBC should host this award show. They’re the only network that’s truly fair and impartial and that’s because they’re the only network with zero nominations!” But things have changed over the past three years for the peacock network. Family drama “This Is Us” won a trophy last year for Sterling K. Brown and it will likely contend again in several categories, while cerebral comedy “The Good Place” could make a splash for its third season. See 2019 Golden Globes predictions.

If the Globes decide to pass on Gervais and go with a new host this year, perhaps they’ll want to stay within their own NBC/Universal family and ask “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Andy Samberg. After all, he previously emceed the 2015 Emmys to great fanfare. “The Good Place” stars Ted Danson and Kristen Bell would also be a fun pairing. And instead of Tina & Amy again, what about a group of current “SNL” ladies like Aidy Bryant, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong?
