Our meeting for this month brought the group together on October 10th. to discuss our planned October trips; and bring up some November and December points of interest for us to visit.

Our first trip was to the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester.

Arthur Griffin was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1903 but did not start his photographic career till 1929. In 1930 he became the exclusive photographer for the Boston Globe Rotogravure Magazine and the New England photojournalist for Life and Time magazine.

The museum opened in 1992 to promote an appreciation of photographic art and a broader understanding of its visual, emotional and social impact.

The museum is constantly reviewing works by new photographers with an eye toward capturing who the next great artist will be.

The photos were controversial and impelling to view. The pieces on display left us with questions and wonder as to how the photographers created their works with patience and love.

We walked about five minutes to the Black Horse Tavern for lunch. The restaurant has a pub like feeling. The food was very good and the service was exceptional.

As we left the restaurant we walked in a drizzle, but made it back to the cars before the downpour descended pounding on the cars. It was an enjoyable cultural look into some new views of photography for us.

On October 14th we started the day by heading out to Auburndale for breakfast at the Knotty Pine restaurant. The small but very friendly restaurant was crowded but we only had to wait about 10 minutes before we got seated. We had the special, spinach and mushroom omelets which we all enjoyed, and it was fun to be in a crowded local spot frequented by the college kids. We were acknowledged by those people leaving and it is always a nice feeling when young people make the effort for us “older folks”.

After breakfast we had some time for a ride around the area to look at the color changes and the wonderful homes in the area. Our next stop for the day got us headed for the Rivers School Conservatory in Weston Ma. We went to enjoy a Sentimental Journey: A musical trip around the world with the American songbook. The performance was staged by Mr. Dan Loschen, the musical director of the school. He was accompanied by two wonderful singers as they performed songs from around the world.

Old Cape Cod, Key Largo, Route 66, I left my heart in San Francisco, and moonlight in Vermont,(among others). It was a journey for many of us in the audience. A lovely hour spent listening to some good oldies, in a very nice school setting.

The weather was definitely fall-ish but it was great to be out for this Red Hat outing.

Two very educational trips for October and...two great restaurants to enjoy good food and good friends. Another excellent time well spent with each other for happy Red Hat days.
