NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old woman was shot dead by two men at her home in southwest Delhi’s Pochanpur village on Monday morning. They pumped nine bullets into her and then smashed her head with a helmet before fleeing.
DCP (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said a murder case was registered and the victim identified as Kamlesh Sehrawat. It has been learnt that Sehrawat was sitting in the drawing room of her ground floor house in the morning while her maid was preparing breakfast.
Her 20-year-old son had also left for college. Around 10am, the maid said, a motorcycle stopped outside the house and two men wearing helmets entered. They shot Sehrawat multiple times in front of the maid, and then one of them took off his helmet and smashed it on Sehrawat’s head.
Neighbours said they got to know about the incident only when the maid came out of the house and cried for help. Someone called up the police and an emergency response vehicle came and took Sehrawat to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Investigation revealed that Sehrawat was friends with jailed gangster Rajiv Issapur alias Monu. He is the prime accused in the murder of gangster Sandeep alias Mental and his aide Pawan near Dwarka in May this year. Monu had been on the run but was arrested on June 6. He is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.
Police officers said Sehrawat’s murder could be the fallout of the ongoing rivalry between Monu and Mental’s associates. The prime suspect is gangster Sandeep Dhillu, who escaped from police custody on February 19 after throwing chilli powder at policemen.
Sources said that Monu had recently come out on parole and met Sehrawat two days ago. She was provided police protection under the court’s directions after Monu killed Mental. So, she was always escorted by the police whenever she stepped out of the house. On Sunday also, police staff had met her at her place.
Sehrawat’s husband, Rajbir, had been murdered at Kapashera in 2004 following which she was arrested along with her brother and served approximately 2.5 years in jail.
Police are scanning CCTV footage to find out the escape route taken by the assailants.
