LOWELL — A 25-year-old Lowell man who uses a wheelchair was arrested Sunday afternoon when officers found him with a loaded handgun near Suffolk and Broadway streets, according to police.

Capt. Timothy Crowley said in a press release that officers with the Lowell police Gang Unit were in the area of Suffolk and Broadway streets Sunday about 5:15 p.m., when they saw a man pushing another man in a wheelchair.

The officers recognized the man in the wheelchair as Michael Santana of Lowell, and knew Santana was wanted on a warrant charging him with distribution of a Class B substance, Crowley said.

Santana was taken into custody on the warrant, and as he was being searched, officers found a loaded .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun, according to Crowley.

Santana was additionally charged with unlawfully carrying a loaded firearm. He was to be arraigned Monday in Lowell District Court.
