When the St. Matthew Lutheran Church on Boggs Run Road in Marshall County decided to provide scholarships to local students, they did not expect to receive so many applicants.
They had planned to award five scholarships, but after reviewing the 26 applications, they had trouble narrowing it down.
So they decided to give all 26 applicants an award.
The 16 John Marshall and 10 Cameron High School students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The scholarships are being funded through a sum of money left to the church by Wesley Butts when he passed away.
“We just looked at ways of helping folks, and when we got that gift of the money we thought we didn’t need to use it for ourselves. Let’s use it for the community. We thought about the kids, and that is how we came about this,” said Pastor Sean Smith.
The students were invited to a luncheon Sunday at the church where they were recognized.
Pastor Smith wished the students well in their college careers, and even offered to send them care packages on behalf of the church.
