Medicine Man recently added a store in Longmont -and those behind the popular recreational dispensary say the opening will bring more affordable marijuana to the market.

“There hasn’t been a lot of competition so dispensaries were able to charge what the market could bear,” says Sally Vander Veer, the CEO, and owner of Medicine Man. “We’re going to come in and change that up a little bit.”

Longmont’s City Council in 2017 had voted to allow up to four recreational marijuana businesses to open within city limits. The city fielded 13 applications from recreational businesses, and, last summer, they announced that Medicine Man had been selected as one of the dispensaries that would be allowed to open up shop.

Medicine Man’s newest dispensary is located at 500 E. Rogers Road in Longmont, northwest of the Sugar Mill.

Medicine Man-which is known for having a large variety of cannabis, edibles, concentrates and CBD products for both medical and recreational patients -opened its Longmont retail dispensary on Feb. 20. The Longmont outpost will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The businesses that were granted approval to open in Longmont went through an extensive process. Their applications were reviewed by the Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division, then by a city technical advisory committee of city staffers with subject-matter expertise-including representatives of the police, fire, planning, community and neighborhood resources departments, the city manager’s office, the city clerk’s office, the finance department and the Boulder Small Business Development Center.

“We were ecstatic to receive a license,” Vander Veer says.
This is Medicine Man’s fourth shop in Colorado, and they are making it unique to Longmont. For example, they’ve developed a strain of marijuana that’s exclusive to the Longmont location. The indica-dominant flower is dubbed the Longmonster, and is great for someone looking for a mellow high, better sleep or pain relief. A portion of the sales from the Longmonster will go to the Medicine Man’s Family Foundation, which benefits local charities.

Also, the new dispensary is situated on “Car Row,” nearby several dealerships. The 5,000-square-foot space in which Medicine Man set up shop once was a man cave of sorts for Roger Weibel, who has owned car dealerships in the area. The designers and architects subtly incorporated car culture into the design of the shop, with a checkered car garage door and display cases built out of tires.

Medicine Man will not be limiting itself to serving Longmont, though. It will be the closest Longmont-based dispensary to the towns of Berthoud, Dacono, Firestone, Frederick, Hygiene, Lyons, Mead, Niwot and Platteville as well.

The Medicine Man opening has also created a dozen new cannabis-related jobs in Longmont.

Medicine Man also wants to make the recreational retail experience easy for those who are new to cannabis, says Vander Veer, whether that’s someone who is looking to have a euphoric experience, get better sleep or relieve pain.
“There’s so much to learn and we want everyone to have a good experience,” she says. “We really specialize in educating first-time customers and we welcome the opportunity to teach them how to consume responsibly.”

Medicine Man wants to cater to the 50-and-up demographic and knowledgeable cannabis consumers.

Budtenders are eager to answer questions to help customers find the strains or products they’re looking for. To stay up to date on the new products, Medicine Man holds weekly education sessions and product training.

In addition to cannabis, there products that combine THC and CBD, which can work in combination to improve wellness. CBD can be used as an anti-inflammatory, as well as reduce anxiety, improve sleep, bring down blood pressure levels, and also help prevent vomiting and nausea, Vander Veer explains. Meanwhile, THC has wellness benefits as well, such as relieving pain and reducing nausea, Vander Veer says, and some strains can help promote sleep.

The Longmont store will carry the popular Medicine Man product line along with well-known brands carried at the other three Medicine Man locations, including: Canyon Cultivation, Cheeba Chews, Coda, CSC, Dutch Girl, Keef Cola, Incredibles, Mary’s Medicinals, MedPharm, Ripple, Robhots, Stratos, Sweet Grass and Wana.
