UPDATE:

ZIGZAG, Ore. -- A Gresham woman and her mother were found safe after spending the night in a car, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies found the women's vehicle along the Lolo Pass near the Pacific Crest Trail northwest of Mount Hood on Monday morning.

Officials said the women walked uphill to get cell reception and report their location.

Deputies said 27-year-old Lauren Zanko and her mother, Tracy, got stuck in the snow.

Zanko's fiancé reported them missing, telling Gresham police he had last heard from them Sunday afternoon. Police said the women planned to go hiking.

Veteran Hoodland firefighter Eric Macy said adventurers should go prepared, especially this time of year.

"I recommend that you take extra food, water and maybe something like a blanket or extra coat, because if you do get stranded, there is very little if any cellphone service, and at least let somebody know where you are going," he said.

It's always a good idea to check road conditions before heading out. Carry the 10 essentials and a GPS locator. They don't require cell service to operate and they're not terribly expensive.

Both women are OK and were home by early Monday evening, authorities said.
