A primary school has threatened to stop serving meals to pupils if their parents run up debts of as little as £10.50.

Angus council was accused of preparing to allow the children of struggling families to go hungry with its policy, which is thought to be detrimental to a pupils’ ability to learn.

A letter sent out to parents by Jennifer Morison, head teacher of Inverbrothock Primary School in Arbroath, warns that “lunches will not be provided if an individual account has a negative balance greater than £10.50”.

Children in primary one to three are provided with free school meals regardless of income. However, the parents of older pupils are expected to pay unless they qualify for free meals by receiving receive certain benefits. In
