WILLMAR - Woodland Centers is seeking a slice of state funds that have been made available for capital projects at regional behavioral health crisis centers.

The Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners recently approved an application for a share of the money.

The local proposal involves renovating and updating the crisis and detox center at the main Woodland Centers facility in Willmar.

The crisis and detox units haven't been upgraded since the 1970s and are in need of safety upgrades as well as cosmetic improvements, said Dr. Ashley Kjos, Woodland Centers chief executive.

"They're highly utilized," she said of both units.

The availability of state funds offers a good opportunity for Woodland Centers to do an upgrade, she said. The proposed project, estimated at $327,000, includes safety measures for bathrooms and for room furnishings, along with new flooring, wall coverings and windows.

The Minnesota Legislature appropriated $28.1 million this year to help fund the design, construction, rehabilitation or equipping of regional behavioral health crisis centers that provide mental health or substance use disorder services.

Proposals were due this month to the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Grant awards will be determined early in 2019.

Woodland Centers is a nonprofit regional provider of community mental health services to children and adults in Big Stone, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Meeker, Renville and Swift counties.
