The Washington PostDemocracy Dies in Darkness

Actress Carrie Fisher brought her service dog to the White House correspondents’ dinner — and he was a hit

There is a lot to to see (and overhear) in the ladies’ room at the Washington Hilton during the White House correspondents’ dinner. Look, there’s Sophia Bush reapplying red lipstick while having a conversation about military service. And clearly that MSNBC host did not like Larry Wilmore’s routine. Oh and look, there’s Carrie Fisher and her dog… Wait what?

On Saturday night, the black-tie set was totally unfazed as the “Star Wars” actress and her furry plus-one, a therapy dog aptly named Gary Fisher, schmoozed — and primped.

We caught up with Fisher and Gary, both guests of the Guardian newspaper, just as they were exiting the ladies’ room after putting on their finishing touches — lipstick for her and collar straightening for him.

Fisher, who announced publicly that she was bipolar in a 2000 interview with Diane Sawyer and uses Gary to help her manage the disorder, said that her dog’s presence on the red carpet and in the ballroom had been approved and that he had been appropriately vetted.

The French bulldog, Fisher said, “is all over Instagram. Check him out.” We did. He has more than 10,000 followers.

Gary, who was a fixture on the “Star Wars: Force Awakens” red carpets, is no stranger to the flashbulbs and posed (tongue out) for dozens of selfies requested by slightly confused but otherwise delighted wonks. Fisher herself didn’t mind taking the back seat to her famous friend, even getting down on all fours more than once to get just the right angle. Chewbacca is probably somewhere mad.
