StubHub Center Becomes First MLS Stadium with LED Sports Lights
July 14, 2016 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
CARSON, Calif. - Beginning this Friday, July 15, StubHub Center will become the first soccer-specific stadium in Major League Soccer to illuminate its field using high-efficiency LED sports lights. The new upgraded lights will use over 60 percent less energy than the lighting array it replaces.
"We are proud to be the first stadium in Major League Soccer to install these state-of-the-art lights," said StubHub Center General Manager Katie Pandolfo. "The benefits of using LED lights at our facility are twofold: dramatically enhancing event presentation for both fans and broadcast while operating in a more energy-efficient manner. We are excited to continue to implement innovative and sustainable energy ideas at StubHub Center."
By using energy-efficient LED lights at the stadium, StubHub Center will benefit broadcast cameras and spectators during games, halftime breaks and before and after the final whistle. The lighting, which can be adjusted to change the lighting levels for different events, will be used during LA Galaxy games and other events hosted by StubHub Center.
"The Galaxy continue to strive to lead MLS in innovation while enhancing our fan experience at StubHub Center," said LA Galaxy President Chris Klein. "We look forward to our fans experiencing Galaxy games in a more vibrant environment under the new lights at StubHub Center."
The use of LED lights offer more detailed televised viewing, including slow-motion replays and improved picture quality. The LED lights also turn on without a 15-20 minute period to warm up required by metal halide or other HID lamps.
Additionally, in accordance with StubHub Center and LA Galaxy's Protect the Pitch initiative to implement sustainable energy practices at StubHub Center, utilizing LED sports lights will allow StubHub Center to use 60% less energy than the previously-used lights. StubHub Center will kick off the full use of LED sports lights this Friday, July 15, when the club hosts the Houston Dynamo at 8 p.m. PT (UniMás).
