Pittsburgh Police say a group of about 20-25 masked people armed with rocks and sticks have broken several windows at the Allegheny County Jail as well as the windows on multiple police cruisers. A bicycle officer also suffered a shoulder injury during a scuffle. Eleven suspects were handcuffed and taken into custody. The group was seen fleeing the area of the jail, running for the river trail near the 10th Street Bridge.Several separate scenes were manned by police at once while dealing with various clusters of suspects who ran from the jail. At least three large, black windows were broken on the back wall of the jail facing the jail trail. Large rocks were seen on the asphalt pathway next to the fence leading toward the jail building. Shards of glass could be seen below the broken windows on the building. A rock was still visible inside a Allegheny County Sheriff's office vehicle that had a hole in the rear window. Warden Orlando Harper released a statement after the vandalism. “Earlier thisevening, a group of protesters downtown began setting off fireworks andthrowing rocks at the County Jail and the Municipal Court Building. Theiractions resulted in several non-security windows being broken at the Jail aswell of several car windows being smashed at the Municipal Court Building. We thank thePittsburgh Police for its quick response to the calls to County 9-1-1. At thistime, we understand that there are 11 people in custody and that PittsburghPolice will be making determinations regarding charges against thoseindividuals. Contrary toreports made by the group that has been organizing the protests over the lastfew days, there are no sit-ins or protests going on inside the jail, nor havethere been. Tonight’s incident has not impacted operations at all. The facilityremains secure and safe for all inmates and employees," said Harper.
