Recap

Meet Rebecca Bunch. She loves musicals. Theater camp is everything to her. As she muses her sadness that her parents didn’t show to her big performance to her theater camp boyfriend, Josh Chan, he appears uninterested.

Josh, actually, seems to have lost interest in Rebecca altogether. He’s got to worry about baseball season and even though he’s awoken her sexual nature at camp this summer, he’s breaking up with her.

Maybe Rebecca shouldn’t have worried about theater camp and gone to law camp, just like her mom suggested.

TEN YEARS LATER.

Rebecca is a lawyer. Unhappy with her life, she sits alone, watching TV. And ad for butter catches her attention when it asks, “When was the last time you were truly happy?”

At work, Rebecca is getting a huge promotion. It’s on paper fantastic. Until Rebecca looks down, and see a paper ad for that butter…”When was the last time you were truly happy?”

This may be what happy feels like, but Rebecca doesn’t feel very happy. She races outside to figure out what to do. Does she accept this promotion? A prayer in the alley asking for guidance leads up to look up and see a billboard for, you guessed it, that butter. “When was the last time you were truly happy?”

And directly under that ad stands Josh Chan. Rebecca chases after Josh, and through their conversation discovers that he’s been living in New York, but tired of the rat race. People are much happier in West Covina, California.

Happy.

Josh tells Rebecca that if she’s ever in West Covina, she should look him up. Rebecca mulls it over, and makes her choice. Even though she’s a hard working lawyer, and this job is her whole world, she turns down the promotion to junior partner at her firm, very dramatically. She’s headed to West Covina, California, where dreams live.

The music starts, and Rebecca takes us across the country, singing a fun musical number about how she didn’t move here for Josh, but if he happens to be here, you know, that would be great. She’s not having a nervous breakdown. No, of course not. She’s just never seen a pretzel this big. Her new life is about to start. And again, by coincide; Josh just happens to live here.

Rebecca dumps out all of her prescription medicines as she listens to her mother shout at her over the phone about having a nervous breakdown. She hangs up on Mom, and takes her phone to the couch to type out a very strategically planned text message to Josh Chan. Because, you know, she just happens to be in West Covina. No reply. Maybe her phone is broken?

Rebecca takes a job at Whitefeather Law. They’re excited to have a real New York lawyer at the firm, though they can’t understand why she’d leave a firm there to move to West Covina.

As her new boss tries to describe pizza to her, she frantically keeps checking her phone. She picks up some pamphlets about her new firm, just in case anyone asks her why she’s moved out here, you know she can give them a pamphlet. (She didn’t move here for Josh, can’t stress that enough.)

Rebecca meets Paula, who is a paralegal at the firm that doesn’t trust her at all. Paula takes one look at Rebecca’s resume and her antenna goes up. With her stunning background, there’s got to be a scandal that brought her to West Covina.

Her new boss is going through a divorce, cries on her shoulder, mistakes her for NOT being Jewish (her nose is just such a button,) and he wants to get his daughter back. He asks Rebecca to represent him in the trial. Her phone buzzes…Josh has checked in nearby! She quickly fumbles through an explanation about why she needs to leave, and exits the office. (Not to follow Josh, of course.)

Rebecca arrives at the bar, and meets Greg, a bartender. She tells him that she’s from New York, to which he replies that his childhood friend just moved back from New York, maybe she knows him? Josh Chan?

Rebecca once again, fumbles through an explanation about why she moved here, and how she randomly bumped into Josh, and he made West Covina sound so great. Greg sees through her right away it seems.

In any case, Josh just left, but Greg knows where he’s going to be tomorrow, a party. He invites her to be his date at the party, which Rebecca immediately jumps at.

At work, Paula continues to be suspicious of Rebecca, and her very sudden happiness. She tells her that she doesn’t buy any of Rebecca’s excuses. Paula is going to figure out what’s really happening with Rebecca. It doesn’t matter. Rebecca is going to go on with her life.

The music starts, and Rebecca is getting ready for her night. It’s the sexy gettin’ ready song (which quite frankly, is hilarious and not at all sexy.) That rapper definitely needs to apologize to some bitches.

Paula gets to work investigating Rebecca’s computer.

Greg picks up Rebecca. He’s a really sweet guy, who seems to really be into her. But she’s distracted, and asks him why she hasn’t seen Josh yet. He wonders if she’s into Josh. He’d totally get it if she is. She makes out with him to throw him off track. They make out in every corner of the house. Greg gets a text from Josh. He’s not coming to the party. Josh’s girlfriend is making him go to a quincenera. Rebecca didn’t know Josh had a girlfriend. Greg again asks her if she’s into Josh. She distracts him with kisses again, while asking him questions about Josh.

Josh moved back to West Covina to be with his high school girlfriend and they got back together. Rebecca starts to cry, and Greg insists that they go home, even though he really needs this hookup.

As they leave, they run into Paula, who has arrived at the party. Rebecca pulls her to the front yard. Paula knows about Josh Chan. Rebecca checked his Facebook page 65 times, and his Instagram 18 times. Paula knows that she’s obsessed with Josh, moved to West Covina for him, and that she’s crazy. Rebecca again insists that while Josh made her feel glitter exploding happy, she didn’t move here for Josh. That would have been crazy.

She’s not crazy.

As she breaks down, Paula’s walls come right down. She assures Rebecca that she isn’t crazy. She’s in love. And she’s brave for following Josh across the country. Paula is going to be Rebecca’s friend, and they’re going to win this thing together.

But Josh has a girlfriend. Paula doesn’t think he can possibly be that into his girlfriend, otherwise he would have mentioned her in his Facebook profile. Paula insists that they will get Josh together. Just then, her phone buzzes. Josh wants to get dinner.

Paula asks Rebecca if she wants to drive by his house, cause she knows where he lives. This is going to be so much fun.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 1 Episode 1 Quotes

Rebecca: Where are you from again?
Josh: West Covina, California. 91791!
Rebecca: West Covina, I remember that. That's near the beach, right?
Josh: Yeah, only two hours...well, four in traffic.

Dear God, I don't pray to you because I believe in science. But I don't know what to do. Give me guidance, please. Ah-men. A-men. Amen?
