New York struck first, opening the scoring in the top of the opening inning. Clay Buchholz allowed a lead-off double, and that runner came around to score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly. However, Buchholz settled down thereafter with another solid performance. That was the only run he allowed through 5.2 innings, on four hits and two walks, with three strikeouts. Andrew Chafin came in and got a big out to end the sixth, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position.

The D-backs offense didn’t find it easy going against Zack Wheeler, the first ten batters for Arizona being retired before Paul Goldschmidt walked with one out in the fourth. A Jake Lamb single was followed by a David Peralta RBI double which tied the score, and then Ketel Marte gave Arizona the lead with a groundout. Jake Lamb had an RBI single, and it looked like the A-bullpen would make that 3-1 advantage stand up, with Yoshihisa Hirano, Archie Bradley and Brad Boxberger pitching 2.2 scoreless innings. But Boxberger couldn’t get the third out in the ninth, blowing his third save and allowing four runs. The D-backs had to settle for a split. And not even a banana one...
