Pantone’s Color of the Year Is Classic Blue and It’ll Be a Bold Addition to Weddings Everywhere
It’s that time of year again when Pantone, the authority in colors, announces its color of choice. The Pantone Color of the Year 2020 was unveiled Wednesday, December 5, as Classic Blue, or the 19-4052 swatch that is a representation of what the sky looks like at dusk.
“It’s a color that anticipates what’s going to happen next,” said Laurie Pressman, the VP of the Pantone Color Institute, whose team selects the hot hue of choice. On its website, Pantone says the color is one “instilling calm, confidence and connection.” It’s an “enduring blue hue” and it provides stability “as we cross the threshold into a new era.”
Classic Blue is a stark departure from Pantone’s Color of the Year in 2019, Living Coral, and the previous shade of Ultra Violet in 2018. Living Coral was intentionally selected with the concept of sustainability in mind especially with couples wanting to protect coral reefs and other environmental sanctuaries around the world.
In weddings, the color of the year has long influenced couple’s color palettes and how they choose to visually represent their love story. Classic Blue is fit for exactly that type of couple: those who want a more classic style wedding. However, we also see this purposeful shade making ripples amongst those who want to implement the feeling of nature—the stillness of skies and deep waters—into their wedding vision as well.
“A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.
Of course, derivatives of blue have been one of the most frequently used primary colors by the Pantone Color of the Year in the last 20 years. In 2000, to welcome the new millennium, the institute chose Cerulean Blue, which might sound familiar to those who’ve seen The Devil Wears Prada. In the next five years, Aqua Sky was chosen (2003) followed by Blue Turquoise (2008). In 2010, to mark a new decade, the Pantone Color of the Year was Turquoise and in 2016, Serenity Blue was one of two complementary colors chosen for the annual benchmark.
In other words, blue is here to stay at least according to Pantone, which is why it’s ideal for couples who typically want a color that endures time. Here are some ways you can include it in your wedding below.
