3 DIY recipes to detox household cleaners

Find out how to spring clean toxic cleansers in your house...
Mom blogger Carolina King shares DIY recipes for household cleaners with Great Day Washington host Markette Sheppard.

It's so easy to purchase everything you need to clean your home ready-made from the supermarket to make it feel fresh and springy, but when you buy a household cleanser that has 27 ingredients, just how fresh can it be? And what happens when you are cooking and eating food off of surfaces cleaned with potentially harmful chemicals—does your body ingest those chemicals? Most likely, yes.

That's why Carolina King, a mother of two girls under age 5 and founder of the blog Mama Instincts, says she has made the switch to organic cleaning supplies.

She makes them at home and King shares these recipes if you'd like to do the same:

DIY Reusable Wipes

  • 1 airtight glass container
  • 2 cups of filtered warm water
  • 2 tablespoons Castile soap
  • 10 Drops of Lemongrass essential oil
  • 10 drops of Lavender essential oil Reusable cloth wipes

Directions: Add 2 cups of filtered water to glass container and then add castile soap. Next, add essential oils and mix well.

If you’re using dry reusable wipes bought from the store, then cut them in half. If you’re using baby’s old wash clothes, then the sizes are probably fine the way they are.

Roll each wipe and place it standing up inside the container with the water-castile soap mixture inside.

Close the lid and shake well. Your wipes are easy to use. It's that simple!

DIY Toy Cleaner

  • Glass spray bottle
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of white vinegar
  • Optional: 10-15 drops of Germ Destroyer essential oil or Clear the Air or Nature’s Shield.

Directions: Add the water to the glass bottle and then add the vinegar, plus the optional drops. Shake it gently and it’s ready to use. It’s that simple!

DIY Hardwood Cleaner

  • Glass spray bottle
  • 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup of water (if you’re trying to remove something that’s stuck on the floor, use warm water instead)
  • Measuring cup

Directions: Pour 1 cup of water into measuring cup. Add the white vinegar followed by the vegetable oil. Mix it with a spoon. Add the mixture to glass spray bottle. Give it a good shake. Spray on floor and wipe off with a mop or cloth. It's that simple!
