Tonight the Penguins host the New York Rangers for the first time since last April 5, when Jussi Jokinen’s shootout goal against Henrik Lundqvist lifted Pittsburgh to a 2-1 victory. Jokinen and New York’s Rick Nash had traded goals in the third period . . . The Penguins are 9-2-0 in their last 11 games against the Rangers, including a 1-1-0 mark this season . . . Nov . 6 in New York, Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan scored goals 1:05 apart late in the first period on the way to a 3-0 lead, and Lundqvist made 28 saves in a 5-1 Rangers’ victory . . . On Dec . 18 at Madison Square Garden, Brandon Sutter scored a third-period goal and the lone goal of the shootout as the Penguins, despite losing a two-goal lead in the final eight minutes of regulation, earned a 4-3 victory . . . Pittsburgh has won three consecutive shootouts against New York, last falling to the Rangers in a shootout on Dec . 3, 2008 in New York (2-3) . . . The Penguins have scored first in 11 of the last 13 games between the teams . . . Pittsburgh has won four straight home games against New York, outscoring the Rangers, 12-3, in the process . This streak follows a five-game home winless streak against New York (0-3-2) . . . The Penguins have been held to two or fewer goals in seven of their last nine home games against the Rangers, while the Rangers have been held to three or fewer goals in 20 of their last 23 games here in Pittsburgh . . . He had points in 16 straight games against them (10+19) before being blanked in two of his last three games against them. Crosby had 10 goals in a seven-game span against New York ending Feb. 12, 2010 but has not scored in his last 12 games against New York. . . Pittsburgh is playing at home for the first time since its 4-3 victory over Calgary on Dec. 21. The Penguins concluded a stretch of four straight road games with a Dec. 31 afternoon game in New Jersey, a stretch that began with a 5-0 loss in Ottawa on Dec. 23 that snapped their seven-game win streak. Pittsburgh played in Carolina on Dec. 27 and in Columbus on Dec. 29. . . The loss in Ottawa marked just the fourth time in 358 regular-season games under Dan Bylsma that Pittsburgh lost a game by five or more goals. . . The seven-game win streak was the Penguins’ eighth win streak of 7-plus games under Bylsma; they had five such streaks in their first 31 seasons. . . Pittsburgh had several injured players close to returning to the lineup last week, including Brooks Orpik (concussion), Tanner Glass (hand), Rob Scuderi (ankle) and Malkin. . . This is the fourth stop on a fivegame road trip for the Rangers, who played at Florida on Dec. 31 and finish the trip tomorrow night in Toronto. . . New York had won two straight and three of its last five games before beginning the trip in Washington on Dec. 27. . . The Rangers concluded a teamrecord nine-game homestand with a 2-1 shootout win over Toronto on Dec. 23, although they finished the homestand with just three victories. . . Brad Richards was leading the Rangers in scoring coming out of the Christmas break with nine goals and 26 points in 38 games, followed by Mats Zuccarello (8+17). . . Richards was 10th among active scorers in points-per-game against the Penguins at that point, with nine goals and 42 points in 40 career games (1.05) against Pittsburgh. The only active players with more assists than Richardsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 33 were Scott Gomez (42), Daniel Alfredsson (43) and Patrick Elias (46). . . Among active goaltenders facing at least 20 career shots in shootouts, Lundqvist was second in save percentage at .759, surpassed only by Marc-Andre Fleury at .773. Lundqvist had faced 299 shootout attempts, most by any goaltender. 8

ONLY OVIE: Capitals right winger Alex Ovechkin needed just 34 games to reach the 30-goal plateau this season . Ovechkin netted his 30th in a 5-4 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils on Dec . 21 . It was the fewest number of games required by Ovechkin to score 30 goals, bettering his previous-best 39 in 2007-08 (Ovechkin finished with 65 goals that season) . Ovechkin reached 30 goals for the ninth straight season and is the only player in the NHL to score at least 30 every season since 2005-06 . He also became one of six players all time to score 30 goals in his first nine NHL seasons, joining Mike Bossy, Mike Gartner, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri and Bryan Trottier .

FILLING THE NET: The Chicago Blackhawks returned from the Christmas break averaging an NHL-leading 3 .62 goals per game and had scored five or more goals in a game an NHL-best 15 times in their first 39 games . Chicago also had an NHLhigh six players with at least 10

goals — right winger Patrick Kane (21), left winger Patrick Sharp (16), right winger Marian Hossa (14), center Jonathan Towes (13), left winger Brandon Saad (12) and center Andrew Shaw (10) .

CLIMBING THE LADDER: New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist’s appearance on Dec . 20 against the New York Islanders was the 539th of his career and broke a tie for No . 3 all-time among Rangers goalies with Ed Giacomin (538) . Lundqvist trails only Mike Richter (666) and Gump Worsley (582) in that category .

BRUINS BY TWO: Boston hosted Ottawa on Dec . 27 riding a streak during which a Bruins player had scored two goals in a game for six consecutive games (right winger Reilly Smith twice, right winger Jarome Iginla twice, defenseman Zdeno Chara once and left winger Brad Marchand once) . Chara’s efforts along those lines helped Boston improve to 8-0-0 when he scores a goal and 15-0-0 when he registers a point .

MARIO LEMIEUX CO-OWNER

Mario Lemieux, one of the most respected figures in National Hockey League history, is in his 15th season as co-owner and chairman of the board of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Under the leadership of Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle, the Penguins have become one of the premier franchises in the NHL and in all of sports, leading the way in fan relations, youth marketing, community outreach and innovative technology while consistently putting a winning product on the ice — including seven straight playoff appearances, three conference finals appearances in the past six years and a Stanley Cup championship in 2009. Known as Le Magnifique, Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVP awards and two Conn Smythe Trophies in addition to two Stanley Cups. A gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a relentless series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). After retiring as a player in 1997, he put together an ownership group to buy the Penguins out of bankruptcy in September, 1999 and then returned to the ice on Dec. 27, 2000 — becoming the first player-owner of the modern era. In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its annual golf tournament, which has raised more than $9 million for charity. RON BURKLE CO-OWNER

Ron Burkle, one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 15th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have become one of the outstanding ownership tandems in professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his essential role in negotiations for a new arena. CONSOL Energy Center is considered one of the finest indoor facilities in North America and has attracted many national-level events to Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for six-plus seasons. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is Co-Chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League, Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy and AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Ron was the Founder and Chairman of the Ralph’s/ Food4Less Foundation and the Fred Meyer Inc. Foundation. David Morehouse is Chief Executive Officer and President of the Penguins, overseeing every aspect of the team’s operations. Since Morehouse was named President in April, 2007, the Penguins have reshaped their image and strategic vision with an emphasis on branding, fan relations, youth marketing, community interaction, corporate outreach and innovative technology. He was given the additional responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer in September, 2010. He reports directly to co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle. An emphasis on branding and marketing, coupled with the team’s success on the ice, enabled the Penguins to lead all U.S.based NHL, NBA and MLB teams in local television ratings during the 2012-13 season. The Penguins’ rating of 12.66 was the highest achieved by any U.S.-based NHL, NBA or MLB team on a regional sports network since 2002. Keeping with that trend, the Penguins led all U.S.-based NHL teams in website traffic and Twitter followers while continually setting new standards for merchandise sales. Youth hockey participation also is on the rise — in part because of the organization’s support for efforts such as Sidney Crosby’s Little Penguins Learn to Play program, which distributes free head-to-toe hockey equipment, including skates, to 1,000 kids ages 5-7 each year. The Pittsburgh native joined the Penguins in 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. Ray Shero has established himself as one of the premiere NHL general managers during his tenure with the Penguins. Shero, an active member with USA Hockey and a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group, will serve as associate general manager for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Shero, who is in his eighth season as Pittsburghâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GM, has transformed a franchise that missed the playoffs from 2002-06 into a perennial championship contender, including two Stanley Cup Final appearances and a Cup title in 2009. Shero, who was named general manager of the Penguins in May, 2006, arrived with a firm, forward-thinking managerial style that incorporates cutting-edge methods of technology, player relations, prospect development and salary cap management. Shero cut his administrative teeth during 14 seasons as an assistant general manager with the Nashville Predators (1998-06) and Ottawa Senators (1993-98). Shero, a native of St. Paul, Minn., was raised in a hockey family filled with tradition. His father, Hall of Famer Fred Shero, played for the NY Rangers (1947-50) and coached the Philadelphia Flyers for seven seasons. Fred and Ray Shero are one of the few father-son tandems to have their names on the Cup. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He twice led the team in scoring and was named team captain on two occasions. He graduated in 1984 as one of the top-10 scorers in school history. Shero, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1982 NHL Draft, spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair. 38

JASON BOTTERILL ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER

Jason Botterill is in his fifth full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position in May, 2009, by GM Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top minor-league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 37, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospect development. His avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining the Pittsburgh organization, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in the 1994 NHL Draft and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, ‘95 and ‘96 and won gold medals in all three tournaments. Following his playing career, he returned to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA. Jason and his wife, Andrea, and their daughter, Alisa, reside in Pittsburgh.

DAN BYLSMA HEAD COACH

Dan Bylsma is already one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history, leading the team to a Stanley Cup championship, winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s Most Outstanding Coach, and an Atlantic Division title in just four-plus seasons behind the bench. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.669) in team history with an all-time record of 201-93-25. His 201 wins are the second most in team history (Eddie Johnston, 232). In 2008-09, Bylsma penned one of the most remarkable starts to a head coaching career in NHL history. He began the season in his first head coaching job, with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, and finished the year by raising the Stanley Cup. Bylsma was promoted to Pittsburgh on Feb. 15, 2009, inspiring an 18-3-4 run in the final 25 games to climb from 10th to fourth place and home-ice advantage in the opening round. Bylsma joined the Penguins organization as assistant coach with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in 2006. Two seasons later he was promoted to WBS head coach in 2008-09. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-04. He was a member of Anaheimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2003 Western Conference championship team. TONY GRANATO ASSISTANT COACH

Tony Granato is in his fifth season on the Penguins coaching staff. Granato will also serve as assistant coach under head coach Dan Bylsma for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato, 48, spent six seasons with the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach (2002-04 and 2008-09). Granato led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 NHL seasons with the NY Rangers (1988-90), Los Angeles (90-96) and San Jose (96-01). In 1997, he played in the NHL All-Star Game and was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. Granato played four seasons at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Hall of Fame in 2000. He also played for the U.S. National Team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. TODD REIRDEN ASSISTANT COACH

Todd Reirden is in his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Penguins. Reirden, 41, joined the Penguins organization August 18, 2008 as an assistant coach in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. He was promoted to head coach following Dan Bylsma’s promotion to Pittsburgh. Reirden then joined Pittsburgh’s extended playoff coaching staff and helped the team win the Stanley Cup. In his only full season as head coach in WBS in 2009-10, Reirden led the team to a 41-34-2-3 mark and a playoff berth. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with his alma mater — the Bowling Green Falcons. Reirden played 13 professional seasons, appearing in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son, Travis, and reside in the North Hills. JACQUES MARTIN ASSISTANT COACH

Jacques Martin is in his first season on the Penguins coaching staff. Martin, 61, has spent nearly 30 years coaching at the NHL level, serving as head coach with St. Louis (1986-88), Ottawa (1995-2004), Florida (2005-08) and Montreal (2009-12) and as an assistant coach with Chicago (1988-90) and Quebec/Colorado (1990-95). Martin was an associate coach on the 2002 Canadian Olympic squad that won a gold medal in Salt Lake City. Martin was a Jack Adams Award recipient as NHL Coach of the Year with Ottawa in 1998-99, and was a finalist on three other occasions. Also as head coach of the Florida Panthers, Martin worked a dual role as general manager from 2006-08. Martinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NHL head coaching resume includes 1,294 games, 613 wins and 12 playoff appearances in 17 seasons. He ranks 10th all-time in wins and seventh all-time in games coached in NHL history. Martin played college hockey at St. Lawrence University. Jacques has two daughters.

MIKE BALES GOALTENDING COACH

Mike Bales is in his first season as Pittsburgh’s goaltending coach after serving the previous two seasons as the club’s goaltender development coach. Under Bale’s tutelage during the 2012-13 season, goaltenders Jeff Zatkoff and Brad Thiessen of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins combined to allow the fewest goals (178) in the American Hockey League (AHL). Zatkoff’s 1.93 goals-against average was the lowest in the AHL. Bales, who hails from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, spent 18 seasons playing professionally from 1992-2010, including stints in the National Hockey League with Boston and Ottawa. Bales, who was originally drafted by Boston in the fifth round of the 1990 NHL Draft, also saw action in the American Hockey League, the International Hockey League, Germany, Sweden and Northern Ireland. Bales played three collegiate seasons with Ohio State University from 1989-92. Mike and his wife, Melanie, have three children, William, Alexander and Alexa. Travis Williams is in his third season as Chief Operating Officer of the Penguins, overseeing finance, legal affairs, technology, business development and arena operations while reporting directly to CEO/President David Morehouse. Williams joined the Penguins in 2008 as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs/General Counsel and oversaw the construction and development of CONSOL Energy Center — bringing the project to completion on time and under budget. He is the organization’s liaison with building manager AEG Facilities and works closely with AEG on all arena-related events and initiatives. Williams also is the Penguins’ point man on the development of the former Civic Arena site and the construction of the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry. Previously, he had been a partner at Reed Smith LLP. Williams graduated from Penn State University and received a Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University, summa cum laude. He lives in Nevillewood with his wife, Nichole, and six children.

David Peart is in his third full season as Senior Vice President of Sales and Service, overseeing all local revenue generating departments for the team including business partnerships, corporate sales, premium seating, ticket sales, broadcasting, and concession and merchandise sales strategy. Under his direction, the Penguins created the team’s Founding Partner Program at CONSOL Energy Center and launched one of the most comprehensive fan engagement initiatives in sports helping, the team to be consistently ranked among the top sports teams in Fan Relations, according to ESPN the Magazine. Peart has a wide range of sports management experience, having held senior-level positions with the San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. The Kennedy Township native is a graduate of Point Park University, where he is a member of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife, Julie, have two children.

The first-ever episode of In The Room in 2011 chronicled Sidney Crosby’s return to the lineup after missing more than 60 games due to injury. The show’s staff followed Evgeni Malkin to Russia to witness his off-season workouts in his home country, and documented a unique oneon-one workout session between coach Bylsma and Kris Letang. Season Two showcased the dedication and human side of a hockey player. Joe Vitale said goodbye to his wife and kids before a road trip, and two former NHL captains, Jarome Iginla and Brenden Morrow, said goodbye to their old teams as Ray Shero acquired them prior to the trade deadline. Chatter on the bench between James Neal and Malkin during a game highlighted their unique relationship, and the highs and lows of a long postseason run were revealed. The current season began with a trip to West Point. Lessons in leadership, teamwork and sacrifice were stressed — ideals that the 2013-14 Penguins would build upon. But just to make it short, some of them are mine, some of them are ones that I’ve seen around and have picked up, and a lot of them have come from people in the city of Pittsburgh and surrounding areas that have been given to me by them. I take them under consideration, and I make a decision whether or not I think they’re worthy enough to put on the air and then make it work, and most of them are. So those are where they all come from over the years.” @JESSALYNN35 What made you want to start calling hockey games? #AskLange “I was kind of prodded into it when I was going to college in California. A young man that I was a roommate with had worked around hockey and he asked me, ‘why don’t you go to the amateur league here in Sacramento? I work it right now. Would you be interested?’ I said, ‘I don’t know a red line from a blue line.’ And he said, ‘you never know.’ Those were his exact words. And I went and I became kind of enthralled with it. Worked the rink, ended up working some games doing play-by-play for a college radio station and the rest is history as far as getting into the broadcast business and the game of hockey.” @DYLWINTS What is the most memorable moment you’ve ever witnessed at a hockey game? #AskLange “Well, for me personally, everybody would think it might be a Stanley Cup win; it might be a lot of highlights of Mario Lemieux and [Jaromir] Jagr and others. But to me, the most moving moment that I’ve been involved in with the Penguins organization was the tribute to the late Bob Johnson, the Penguins coach. After he died after bringing the Cup to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the city of Pittsburgh was at its finest, to me, in that moment. The players and everything, it made the tribute at the old Mellon Arena in those days. And that is the most memorable day and night I can recall in my lifetime of calling hockey.” @DANROB95 What’s it like working with the old 2-9er calling games? #AskLange “The old 2-9er is absolutely superb. He’s one of the best gentlemen that I’ve ever run across as far as a working partner. He is a terrific human being and he’s getting up there, so he is now, really, the old 2-9er. Matt Niskanen has always been thought of as a solid No. 5 defenseman. Good at what he does, but not quite a top-four D. But necessity is the mother of invention. When injuries sidelined Brooks Orpik, Kris Letang, Paul Martin and Rob Scuderi — the Penguins’ top four blueliners — Niskanen moved up the depth chart and a bunch of call-ups from the Pens’ Wilkes-Barre/Scranton affiliate checked in beneath him. The result: The Penguins never broke stride, going 9-2 in December before the NHL took its Christmas break. Niskanen, meanwhile, got force-fed astonishing amounts of ice time. His peak was 29:44 vs. the New York Rangers on Dec. 18 at Madison Square Garden, a 4-3 shootout win. He skated 29:26 at Detroit on Dec. 14, a 4-1 victory. Niskanen may eventually go back to being a No. 5 defenseman. But he’s proven he can be so much more. After 39 games, he had three goals and 14 assists. His plus-19 mark ranked Niskanen fifth in the NHL. The upgrade comes with a price. At one point during a post-game interview, Niskanen paused and said, “Boy, am I tired.” But the price paid in sweat equals first place in the Metropolitan Division. continued on page 111

“Our four top defensemen are out so, kind of by default, I’ve got to take over a little bit of that leadership role,” said Niskanen. “Just with my experience and age. It’s been fun. [The younger defensemen] don’t need a lot of guidance. They know how to play. If I can point out a few things to help them, I’ll try to do that. “For most of my career, I’ve been the young guy. Now I’m the most experienced. I still don’t feel that old. I’m only 27. These guys are promising young players.” “These guys” include: Olli Maatta, 19, Niskanen’s partner on the Penguins’ top two in the absence of the top four; Robert Bortuzzo, 24, elevated to a steady spot due to injuries; and minor-league call-ups Simon Despres, 22, Philip Samuelsson, 22 and Brian Dumoulin, 22. “We’re not sheltering anyone,” Niskanen said. “They’re stepping right in there. They have confidence with the puck and they’re playing in a lot of different situations. They’ve got great attitudes. They brought some energy to the room.” Niskanen (6 feet, 209 pounds) has pulled his share of powerplay duty all season. But with Letang injured, Niskanen was continued on page 113

The Penguins’ man-advantage group ranked second in the NHL at the Christmas break with a conversion percentage of 24.8. “The percentage has been good, and we’ve been getting at least a little momentum off it,” said Niskanen. “We’ve been keeping it fairly simple and shooting pucks.” But Niskanen’s big story has been his work as the elder statesman of the Penguins’ temporarily revamped defensive corps. Niskanen, it should be remembered, is a player of pedigree: Dallas took him in the first round of the 2005 NHL entry draft. “We have a lot of defensemen,” said the native of Virginia, Minnesota. “It’s a pretty unique situation. It’s a tribute to what the scouts have been doing, and [GM] Ray Shero. These guys are coming up, showing confidence, stepping right in and just doing a great job. It’s excellent for the organization. “They don’t need much help from me. A lot of them will probably be better than me. I don’t have to tell them too much.”

When the 2014 P&G Gymnastics SPONSORED LOCALLY BY Championships come to Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center in August, there will be two special fans cheering on competitors in the four-day event. Bela Karolyi, one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches, and Carly Patterson, 2004 All-Around Olympic Gold medalist, visited Pittsburgh to check out the venue and to talk about the significance of this event which is being held for the first time in Pittsburgh. The 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, showcase the country’s best male and female gymnasts. It also will determine the U.S. champions and the U.S. national team for the junior and senior elite levels. BELA KAROLYI The nationals also traditionally serve as part of the selection process for the U.S. Team for the World Championships. Simone Biles and Sam Mikulak are the reigning women’s and men’s U.S. all-around champions, respectively. “Wow! What a beautiful arena,” Karolyi says of CONSOL Energy Center on his first visit to the venue. “What an excellent place to perform.” Patterson agrees, “CONSOL Energy Center looks like a great place. I’m excited to be here.” Karolyi says, “I’ll be here rooting and encouraging all of the participants to do their best.” The long-time coach and influential figure in gymnastics, Karolyi now has snowy white hair, and his passion for gymnastics and his signature mustache are as vibrant as ever. Making a round of Pittsburgh media to promote the upcoming P&G Gymnastics Championships, Karolyi talked about the significance of the championships, his career and the future, as well as the rich history of gymnastics. “We could have a world changer here in Pittsburgh with the world medalists who will be here,” Karolyi says. The standards of gymnastics are higher than ever before, according to Karolyi who says that people will not be able to imagine the spectacular athletic CARLY PATTERSON performances that they will see at the 2014 championships. “It will be a great moment in Pittsburgh gymnastics,” he says, adding, “Who knows who will make history? There could be another Nadia [Comaneci] or Gabby [Douglas].” “It will be inspiring,” he says. “The P&G Gymnastics Championships are a unique opportunity to see the best in the world,” Karolyi says. Patterson, who has experienced some great moments in gymnastics history herself, shares this view. “It’s an exciting time for the sport,” she says, pointing out that the 2014 championship will draw the likes of 2012 Olympic Team Gold Medalists Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney, and Biles. “It is the biggest competition of the year,” says Carly pointing out that the best gymnasts in the nation, juniors and seniors will come to Pittsburgh to compete for the country’s highest honors in the sport. For local gymnasts and fans of the sport, Patterson says, “You’re lucky when it comes to your city. We will have the best in the United States, boys and girls, competing. She recalls watching championship performances when she was a young gymnast herself and says that it was inspiring and motivational to her to see high caliber gymnasts vying for top honors. Besides designating gymnastics new national champions and recognizing the individuals’ years of work to hone their performances, Karolyi says, it is “the moment” that is the dream of many young athletes. “Kids are working 8-10 years to get to the national championships.” Karolyi says that for young gymnasts who dream of being champions, the JAKE DALTON impact of witnessing a live competition for national honors can impress and motivate them. “It is the life-time chance to see athletes perform at this level,” he says. “Thousands of kids will come and go home dreaming,” Karolyi says. “Let’s embrace this competition and give kids the opportunity to get inspired. People will be glad that they did,” he says. What attracts Karolyi to the sport of gymnastics? “It’s unique and beautiful,” he says. Floor exercise is his favorite part of gymnastic competition. He calls it a showcase of athletic ability and strength combined with music, dance and expression. “It’s a beautiful combination” he says. When she was competing, Patterson says, “Yes, beam was always my favorite event and to have a dismount named after me that is still one of the hardest dismounts you can do makes me really proud of that. My favorite part of competition now is just watching all the young talent getting better and better and doing so well. It is so nice to sit back and relax and enjoy my sport in a different light, especially knowing that I achieved my ultimate goal in gymnastics.” Discussing what it takes to make a champion, Karolyi says, “The element of performance is needed in addition to the mental element, the drive, soul and feelings.” Mental strength, high difficulty performance and attitude are all necessary to success, he says. Patterson says that excellence in gymnastics teaches and exacts “dedication, commitment and lots of hard work.” Its lessons have relevance for her now as she pursues a college degree from Texas Women’s University and a career in public speaking. On her rise to the top of the world of women’s gymnastics, Patterson laughs and says, “Looking at early videos, no one would have expected it.” continued on page 137

Known as one of the world’s most successful gymnastics coaches and a leader in the sport, Karolyi had a somewhat ironic career as a gymnast. He has produced 28 Olympians, nine Olympic champions, 15 world champions, 12 European champions and six U.S. national champions and says that he struggled in the sport as an athlete in college. “I thought who in the world created this crazy sport.” It was a required study in his physical education training. He says that he was almost “kicked out” of the university over the gymnastics test. His wife Marta, herself a world renowned gymnastics coach, played a crucial role in his gymnastics career. “I met a young lady. She was a great gymnast. We shared a dream together,” he says. Of her gymnastics career, Patterson says, “It was just one of those things that was meant to be.” She confirms that when she attended her cousin’s gymnastics-themed birthday party, “I fell in love with it. My cousin was not a gymnast. She just had her party there.” Laughing, Patterson adds, “She says that I owe her.” Entering the sport at age six, Patterson became the top gymnast in the world in a decade. As a Level 10 gymnast in 2000, she watched Elite gymnasts at a competition and says, “I knew then that I wanted to be like those girls. I knew that I had four SHAWN JOHNSON years to work my butt off to be ready.” “In 2000 a lot happened. I went Elite from Level 10,” Patterson says. She also remembers dealing with her family’s move to another city and having to change gym’s which she says turned out to be a blessing. “I had to keep an eye on the end goal, stay healthy and keep working,” she says. Patterson says that gymnasts have a “special connection” whether they are Olympians or beginners in their first year. To all of the gymnasts who share the dream of being the best, Patterson says, “Gymnastics is such a great sport. Even if you don’t go to the Olympics or get a scholarship, it’s a great foundation, develops motor skills and teaches a lot about your body.” She adds, “Be proud just to be a gymnast. You are doing something that not everyone can do.” Asked about the future of the sport of gymnastics, Karolyi says, “There have been crucial moments in the history of gymnastics when I’ve thought ‘This is the most intense and highest performance of human capacity’.” He cites as examples performances by Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. Comaneci is the only gymnast to ever score perfect 10 in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. In 1984 at the Olympics in Los Angeles, the energetic and physical performance of Mary Lou Retton earned her the all-around gymnastics championship. “The sport is ever developing in difficulty, the components, dance and music. I don’t believe there is a limit now,” Karolyi says. JOHN OROZCO On this topic, Patterson says, “I have already seen the sport of gymnastics rise so much after the 2004 Olympics and it has been great to watch. I only see good things for the future and for our country to keep dominating like we have been!” Citing Retton’s “lovely personality” and “fiery performance,” Karolyi says, “Mary Lou turned the page on gymnastics toward making it the nation’s number one sport.” He points out that women’s gymnastics is the most watched sport in the country. Karolyi calls Retton, “Mary Lou, my sunshine of my coaching career.” He says that unlike some youngsters who were quiet and perhaps intimidated by his coaching style, Retton was bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoyed every second of training and competing. Looking ahead to the next Olympic Games in 2016, Karolyi says, “We are going to try to make it. We will probably retire after 2016,” he says noting that he and his wife have been involved in the sport for some 50 years. “We deserve to retire,” he says, and then after a moment’s pause he adds, “We will never stop contributing as much as we can.”

The UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, scheduled to open in Cranberry in the summer of 2015, will feature two sheets of ice and serve as the Penguins’ official practice rink — but, as Penguins CEO David Morehouse said, “it will be much more than a hockey rink.” The complex will be the first medical facility in the country to focus specifically on hockey-relating training, rehab and injury prevention. “It will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class facility right here in Cranberry,” Morehouse said. UPMC will build the 180,000 square foot facility at an estimated cost of $70 million. PENGUINS ELITE The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which is quickly becoming the premiere AAA hockey program in the area, will feature 14 teams — nine boys teams and five girls teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins Elite teams will compete in the Tier I Elite Hockey League that includes the Philadelphia Junior Flyers, the Buffalo Junior Sabres, the DC Capitals, the Dallas AAA Stars, the Phoenix Junior Coyotes and the Los Angeles Junior Kings, among others. HEADS UP PITTSBURGH During the Summer of 2013, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and UPMC Sports Medicine expanded their KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE concussion awareness program to include a free neck-strengthening kit during the new testing period. To date, over 8,000 youth athletes have been tested through the Heads Up Pittsburgh Program. Free Neurocognitive Baseline Testing was available for athletes age 10-14 at four Community College of Allegheny County campus locations — Boyce, North, South and the West Hills Center. Testing also took place at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side. In an unprecedented move to provide precautions and exercises that could reduce concussions, the first 2,000 participants during that time also received a free neck-strengthening kit. Experts believe this device will help to cut down the number of youthathlete concussions. Those participants that signed up at UPMC Center for Sports Medicine on the South Side and the CCAC North campus were also eligible to have their neck strength tested and be part of an ongoing UPMC research project. “We want to make the game safer for all young athletes. As a possible answer, we added the neck strengthening kit. Recently published research indicates that there is a direct correlation with improved neck strength and the reduction of concussions,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. HOCKEY IS FOR EVERYONE For years Western Pennsylvania youth sports have been dominated by the likes of football, basketball and baseball. Recently however, the region has begun to see a change in preference and participation in sports. Hockey is rapidly becoming the most popular and fastest growing sport in the area. Success seen with the Pittsburgh Penguins on the NHL ice has surely created a demand and a certain excitement around the game, however the popularity of hockey goes well beyond the wins and world class talent the Penguins possess. A genuine love for the game is starting to sweep the area. Kids are beginning to play hockey at younger and younger ages thanks to the Little Penguins: Learn to Play Hockey program. This program will allow 1,000 kids, ages 4-8, to receive free headto-toe gear all thanks to the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods. Since it began in 2008-09 over 4,200 have been introduced to hockey through this program. The Penguins have also teamed up with the DICKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Sporting Goods, Trib Total Media and the YMCA to create the YMCA Jr. Penguins program which introduces children to the sport through ball hockey. To this point well over 3,100 children have learned and participated in organized ball hockey at local YMCAs. Dek hockey is becoming a great way to learn and play hockey without having ice, and was also vital in the development of current Penguins forward Beau Bennett who grew up in sunny California. On top of partnering with the Pennsylvania Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation have looked to support various hockey programs around the Pittsburgh area. The Steel City Icebergs is an adaptive ice hockey program for both children and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, down syndrome and traumatic brain injuries. The Pittsburgh Mighty Penguins is a local sled hockey team, which is an internationally recognized event in the Paralympic games. The Mighty Penguins registered three teams on its roster that include youth, junior and adult players. Pittsburgh Ice (Inclusion Creates Equality) provides children, who may not otherwise have the opportunity, to play ice hockey at no cost and experience such a great game. Defending the Blue Line is a nonprofit organization created by soldiers with the spirit of keeping hockey alive for the children of our nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s military heroes. It ensures that children of military members are afforded every opportunity to participate in the game of hockey by providing free equipment, hockey camps and financial assistance. 140 156

PROJECT POWER PLAY The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation’s Project Power Play initiative continues to flourish! The two newest dek hockey KIDS WILL CHANGE THE FUTURE rinks at Richland Township and Oakmont-Riverside Park are ready just in time for back-to-school programs to utilize. The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, Highmark, the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County began Project Power Play in the summer of 2012 to build two new dek hockey rinks at Banksville Park and Lewis Park in Phase 1 of a three-year plan. By 2014, 12 facilities in the Pittsburgh area will house new dek hockey rinks and the goal of this project is to introduce children to the game at the grass roots level and give them a free venue to play, while keeping them active and having fun. The facilities, 155’ x 75’, are multi-sport courts and each includes a premier dasherboard system like those used in the NHL, players’ benches with shelter, penalty box, scorer’s table, scoreboard, goals and start-up dek hockey equipment. MIKE LANGE

PENGUINS RADIO NETWORK PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER

One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange is calling games in his 39th season with the Penguins, handling radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X and the Penguins Radio Network. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

Two-time Stanley Cup Champion Phil Bourque is in his 11th season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75G-89A) in 344 regularseason games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88G-111A) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for ROOT SPORTS’ coverage of Penguins hockey.

HERE’S HOW REALIGNMENT AFFECTS PITTSBURGH’S SCHEDULE…

In total, the Penguins will play regular-season games this season — 30 against their seven fellow Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the eight teams from the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against the 14 teams from the Western Conference.

Pittsburgh will play five games against the Philadelphia Flyers (3 home; 2 away) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2 home; 3 away), and four games (2 home; 2 away) against the other five Metropolitan Division teams.

The Penguins will play three games each against the eight teams in the Atlantic division — either two at home and one away or once at home and twice away. Teams that the Penguins will play twice at home and once away are Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Pittsburgh will play Boston, Detroit, Florida and Tampa Bay just once at home.

And finally, for the first time since the 1997-98 season, the Penguins will play each of the 14 Western Conference teams once at home and once on the road. 178 continued on page 162

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

The pre-realignment Atlantic Division was known for being one of toughest and most competitive divisions in the NHL, as it was not uncommon to see all five teams battling until the end to make the playoffs every year (and usually at least three advancing). Plus, the gap between the first-place team and the last-place team tended to be relatively small, especially compared to the gaps in other divisions. It also had some of the most intense rivalries, starting with the legendary, hate-filled and bitter one between cross-state teams Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. And there was no love lost between the Penguins and any of the other teams in the division, either. It doesn’t look like the new Metropolitan Division will be any friendlier. All of the rivalries from the former Atlantic Division, of course, will stay intact. The Capitals are already a current rival of Pittsburgh with all of the star power and history, and now that they’ll see more of each other we can only speculate as to how much more intense that will become. And there’s also more juicy potential for dislike to build between the Penguins and both the Hurricanes and Blue Jackets. continued on page 164 181

The main reason Pittsburgh and Columbus could develop an exciting rivalry is the short distance between them. All seven of the Penguins’ Metropolitan Division opponents are within driving distance, but Columbus is by far the closest at just under three hours away. A lot of Penguins fans made the trip to Columbus the last time Pittsburgh played there on Dec. 4, 2010, with an influx of black and gold jerseys in the stands at the game. And with five games between the teams (three in Columbus, two in Pittsburgh) this season — including a home-and-home series on Nov. 1-2 — fans from both teams will venture into enemy territory to support their clubs. Call them destination rivals, if you will, with the added element of fan travel. WASHINGTON CAPITALS

The Penguins and the Capitals already have one of the NHL’s marquee rivalries. They clashed in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field, on a few Super Bowl Sundays and had an epic playoff battle in 2009 when Pittsburgh defeated Washington in seven games during the conference semifinals on its way to winning the Stanley Cup. Now that the two 164 180

teams (just a four-hour drive apart) are in the same division and will play each other four times this season — including a home-and-home series on March 10-11 — it could become even more intense. Pittsburgh and Washington developed such a strong rivalry because of star power. The Penguins have Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin while the Capitals have Alex Ovechkin. They are the three biggest superstars in the league and have been battling for individual honors (in addition to team glory in their playoff series) since Ovechkin broke into the NHL during the 2005-06 season. It’s always exciting to watch when they all go head-to-head. The Penguins-Capitals rivalry flared up in the 90s when the two teams met seven times in 11 years — with the Penguins winning in six of those series. That hatred has been carried over during the Ovechkin-Crosby/Malkin era. And it should only get hotter as the teams enter the same division.

Pittsburgh’s rivalry with Carolina may not be as developed as it is with Washington, but it could get there. If it does, we’d bet it’s because of the Jordan Staal — Brandon Sutter trade. Staal, who played his first six NHL seasons with Pittsburgh, was a key member of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship team and was part of the successful three-center model with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. But Staal wanted to play with his brother Eric, so the Penguins traded Jordan to Carolina at the 2012 NHL Draft for Sutter and prospects Brian Dumoulin and Derrick Pouliot. Staal signed a 10-year, $60-million deal with the Hurricanes a few days later. Staal came to Pittsburgh just once in his first season with Carolina, in the final game of the regular season. The sellout crowd at CONSOL Energy Center gave him an extended standing ovation as a tribute played on the video board, and Staal was emotional as he stood up and acknowledged the fans he had played in front of for his first six seasons. But now that that’s over and done with, don’t expect things to remain as friendly and cordial as they are now. Staal is an important part of Penguins history, but not their present or future. He’s a competitive guy, and the Hurricanes expect a lot from him. He’ll want to do everything he can to lead his team to success in the future, including beating his former team whenever possible. continued on page 168 184

PLAYOFFS

Realignment doesn’t just affect the regular season; it affects the postseason as well. The playoffs are now division-based and with an added wild-card system. The number of total playoff spots, 16, remains the same — eight for each conference. That means the Western Conference will have 14 teams competing for eight playoff spots, while the Eastern Conference will have 16 teams competing for eight playoff spots. It will likely end up being a tighter race for Pittsburgh and the rest of the Eastern Conference. The top three teams in the Metropolitan Division and the top three teams from the Atlantic Division will fill the first six spots. The remaining two spots (Nos. 7 and 8) will be filled by the wild-card teams, who are the next two highest-placed finishers in each conference based on regular-season points and regardless of division. That means the Metropolitan Division could send five teams to the playoffs while the Atlantic sends three; or vice versa. Or they could each send four. NHL.com explained the seeding best… “The seeding of the wild-card teams within each divisional playoff will be determined on the basis of regular-season points. The division winner with the most points in the conference will be matched against the wild-card team with the fewest points; the division winner with the second-most points in the conference will play the wild-card team with the second fewest points. The teams finishing second and third in each division will play in the first round of the playoffs. The winners of each series will play for berths in the conference championship series.” So while the wildcard system makes it possible to play a team in the opening round of the playoffs outside of the division, it’s more likely that teams will be playing the first two rounds against divisional foes. And we’ve seen first-hand the last few years just how intense that can be.

Everybody has probably heard the saying ‘good things happen when you go to the net.’ There is a good reason for that — everything happens there. When you have a chance to shoot, get the puck on net. You also have to make sure that you physically go to the net so that way you are there for tips, rebounds and screens — all plays that lead directly to goals.

ICEBURGH A delight for children of all ages, Iceburgh — the official mascot of the Pittsburgh Penguins not only provides fans with exciting game entertainment but this large, energetic bird can also be seen at a multitude of community events and elementary schools throughout the greater Pittsburgh area. Iceburgh arrived on the scene in 1992 and is a staple at all team events. During Penguins’ home games, fans most definitely notice the antics of Iceburgh leading sections of fans in cheers, greeting young children on the concourse or displaying his athleticism on-ice between periods. In 1995, Iceburgh made his Hollywood debut, starring alongside Jean Claude Van Damme in the motion picture “Sudden Death.” He has gained both national and international exposure through film, TV and a variety of personal appearances. Iceburgh wasted no time getting acquainted with his new home at CONSOL Energy Center in September of 2010. You can find Iceburgh sliding down stair banisters, dancing in the stands and tossing t-shirts to fans. Iceburgh has performed in Russia and Japan, was featured in the opening of ESPN’s SportsCenter and recently performed in front of a record crowd of over 68,000 at Heinz Field for the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He is also regularly featured on in-game videos and has appeared in advertisements and television promos on ROOT Sports. After doing what they had come to Pittsburgh to do, the Boston College Eagles commemorated the occasion by posing for an impromptu, on-ice photo with the Confluence Cup. It’s what BC does, and the Eagles were elated to be able to do so again at the CONSOL Energy Center. “We’re always excited and kind of pinpoint trophy games,” head coach Jerry York explained after his Eagles had once again expanded their collection of hardware by winning the secondannual Three Rivers Classic. For a program that had been to 14 NCAA Tournaments, 10 Frozen Fours and eight NCAA title games and had captured four national championships in the 16 seasons preceding this one, including three of the previous six, the Cup was a welcomed addition. “We feel very proud of it,” York insisted. continued on page 212

The No. 7 Eagles were the favorites coming in and didn’t disappoint, dusting Bowling Green, 5-0, in their opening game and dismantling Penn State, 8-2, in the championship game. They emerged appreciative for the experience. “I thought the tournament was run especially well, really a first-class tournament,” assessed York, the NCAA’s alltime leader in wins with 947. Added BC forward Destry Straight, who produced the first hat trick in Classic history when he netted three goals against Penn State: “Any time you get to play in an NHL building you feel extremely fortunate, especially a building like this.” The Eagles weren’t the only ones happy to have been a part of the Dec. 27-28 event. Bowling Green, which won the consolation game from Robert Morris after initially feeling BC’s wrath, was happy to reconnect to an extent with a couple of the program’s high-profile alums. Said BGSU head coach Chris Bergeron: “We don’t get to play in NHL buildings very often, especially one like this in that there are ties to Bowling Green with [Penguins head coach] Dan Bylsma and [Penguins assistant coach] Todd Reirden. Not only were we able to get exposed to that but to play Boston College and get a taste of how good teams are that are out there, it’s very valuable. “We want to have a connection to this area. We want to be a presence in this area and this tournament helps with that. We are very thankful for the opportunity. Tourney regular Penn State, which beat fellow tourney mainstay Robert Morris before losing to BC, was happy to be back at CONSOL Energy Center in any capacity. “The chance to play in a great venue like this, it’s a tremendous experience in itself,” head coach Guy Gadowsky said. “We hope to someday play in venues like this in March and April, so this gives us a great opportunity and can only give us great experiences.” Gadowsky was referencing NCAA regionals and Frozen Fours, such as the one CONSOL Energy Center had hosted in April of 2013. Robert Morris came up empty in defense of the Confluence Cup it had captured a season ago, dropping back-to-back, 3-2 decisions to Penn State and Bowling Green. But Colonials head coach Derek Schooley could still appreciate the bigger picture as it related to the continued growth of college hockey to the region. “At the end of the day I hope the fans of hockey and the fans of college hockey realize the quality of teams we’re trying to bring to this tournament,” Schooley said. “The Penguins and CONSOL Energy Center and Robert Morris University, we’ve worked so hard to get high-level teams here and promote hockey in Pittsburgh and expose people to college hockey. “Look at the teams that have been in Pittsburgh [in the Classic’s two-year run]. You have Miami, Ohio State, Penn State and Robert Morris and you have Boston College and Bowling Green in the mix. Those are some really exciting teams to have here. “It’s pretty special to be able to be a part of it. Everybody put so much effort into making this a top-notch tournament. It’s a very special event that hockey fans really should enjoy.” It started with BC’s Johnny Gaudreau scoring the tournament’s first goal a mere 1:19 into the opening game. NHL STADIUM SERIES The Penguins will once again take it to the great outdoors, playing in Chicago’s Soldier Field as part of the new NHL Stadium Series on March 1, 2014. The Stadium Series will consist of four outdoor games: two in New York’s Yankee Stadium, one at Dodger Stadium in L.A., and the Penguins vs Blackhawks in Chicago. NISKANEN LEADS A YOUNG DEFENSIVE GROUP BY: DAVE UHRMACHER

When trade rumors were swirling around defenseman Matt Niskanen this summer, almost everyone outside the Penguins organization thought the defender would be shipped elsewhere due to cap constraints before the season began. Fast forward to mid-December, and it is hard to imagine a depleted Pittsburgh defensive core without Niskanen, the leader of a young group currently suiting up on the back end. Niskanen, 27, has been counted on heavily after injuries to the Penguins top-four defensemen, leading to an increased role in every facet of the game. “He’s a guy who’s been way under the radar in terms of what he’s brought to our team, both from puck-moving, defensively and from the different situations he’s been able to play in,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “He’s going to be the leader back there now and you’ve kind of seen that develop from him the last two months in different situations. He’s become more vocal, he’s become more of a leader back there.” 234

The Virginia, Minnesota-native logged a career-high 29:26 minutes at Detroit on Saturday, Dec. 14, the 17th straight game that he finished with a plus or even rating. “Right from the beginning of the year, he stepped in with the absence of some of our defense,” Bylsma added. “His [Niskanen] numbers are fantastic, his plus-minus, the roles he’s played — he’s stepped up on the top power play and done not just an admirable job, he’s done a very good job. Last game he stepped right in there on the power play and with what he was able to do, we get two big goals that help us win that game against Detroit. Ends up playing 29 big minutes.” In addition to being counted on to log big minutes on the ice, Niskanen has also been instructing the crop of young defensemen on how to act as professionals, something he talked about as an important and distinctive experience he had during his time as a rookie in Dallas. “Mattias Norström was a guy who really took me under his wing,” Niskanen said. “He taught me how to be a pro, how to work everyday and how to prepare. Just the ins-and-outs of professional hockey and being a defenseman especially in situations like the penalty kill, I thought he did a really good job of looking after me and he wanted to see me do well, wanted to see me succeed. “I think those experience are ones I remember and I am really thankful for him for doing that. I think I can relay that along to some of the young guys here.” It is something Niskanen will have to do on the fly. Rookie defensemen Olli Maatta, Robert Bortuzzo, Brian Dumoulin, Philip Samuelsson and second-year man Simon Despres have played less than 150 career games combined a whole 300-plus games less than the 446 Niskanen has played in seven seasons in the NHL.

Despite the influx of youth on defense — something the organization has worked to build up in recent history — the calming influence of a ‘veteran’ like Niskanen on the back end has without a doubt expedited the learning curve for the group. “They have been doing a good job,” Niskanen said. “They have a lot of promise, bright futures for a lot of our young defensemen here. It is fun to see them grow. I don’t have to do a lot if I just give them one piece of information on a situation that happens in a game or practice, just try to be there for them and talk to them. “If we can help them just a little bit, that is a rewarding experience. Something I don’t get to do everyday is step into that leadership role and take on more responsibility and help the young guys succeed.” As the uphill climb to the midway point of the 82-game season nears the climax, no doubt is left in the mind of Niskanen or anyone inside the locker room that sticking around has turned out to be the best case scenario for both parties. “He has been great,” Dumoulin said on Niskanen. “The thing about Matt is that he is really calm and he is out there logging big minutes. If you are a young guy, he is someone you want to be like.”
