It doesn’t get much more Metsian than this.

The team announced Brandon Nimmo is headed to the 10-day disabled list with a bruised left index finger Monday, retroactive to Aug. 16, less than a week after manager Mickey Callaway indicated to reporters such a stint wouldn’t be necessary.

Nimmo took a pitch on the finger last week against the Phillies, though an X-ray and MRI came back clean.

“We gave it a try for a few days and then just decided I’m not doing any good for anybody just being able to pinch run on the bench,” said Nimmo before Monday night’s game vs. the Giants. “Hopefully [I’ll] be back as soon as possible.

“It’s just one of those things that didn’t quite progress as quickly as we would have liked, but we’re very hopeful about the future.”

But we’ve seen this injury story before: Mets brass says one thing, while the complete opposite happens shortly thereafter.

Dom Smith, who was brought up as the 26th man for the Mets on Sunday and hit a double in the win over Philadelphia, will remain on the active roster in place of Nimmo.

Smith had been playing some left field with Triple-A Las Vegas, but manager Mickey Callaway said before the game Monday that there were still no plans for Smith to be starting regularly.

“I think with who we have at this point, it might not be a run of games. It could at some point be that,” Callaway said. “We’re not just gonna run him straight through and play him, but he’ll get some playing time. We want to get him some at-bats and see he has continued to improve.”

“He had a great swing last night, and we’re glad he’s up here and he’ll help us out a little bit.”
