John "Jack" Ostby

John "Jack" Ostby, 79, of Reynolds, ND passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood, ND.

John Allen Ostby was born September 19, 1938 in Cando, ND, the son of Jack and Alice (Leach) Ostby. He was raised in Perth, ND and in 1951, moved with his family to Grand Forks, ND, where he graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1955. John entered the United States Army on November 19, 1958 at Fargo, ND. During his military service, John was stationed in Germany, where he met his future wife of 55 years, Renate Porr. He was honorably discharged from military service on February 20, 1962 at Fort Bliss, Texas. John and Renate were married April 14, 1962 in Devils Lake, ND. John and family lived in Grand Forks until 1988, when they moved to the hobby farm he truly loved in Reynolds, ND. John was an avid hunter and fisherman and did taxidermy for many years, mounting trophy animals for his friends and relatives. John was employed for many years as a plumber with Valley Plumbing and Heating in East Grand Forks, MN. He went on to finish his career working for the University of North Dakota.

Those who shared in his life included his wife, Renate; three children, Carmen (Craig) Showalter, Cheyenne, WY, Diana (John) Callahan, Westfield, IN and Michelle Ostby, Reynolds, ND; 3 grandchildren, Danelle King, Jessica James and Jack Callahan; 2 great-grandchildren, Logan King and Jordan James and a stepsister, Karen (Hansen) Moffat, Killarney, ON, Canada.

John was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Howard Hansen and a stepbrother, Keith Hansen.

Memorials may be given to Northwood Deaconess Health Center, 4 North Park Street, Northwood, ND 58267.

Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2018 in the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel.

Family Greeting: One hour prior to the service in the funeral home on Friday.

Interment: I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Cando, ND, in the summer.

Military Honors: Accorded at the time of interment in Cando, ND.
