Canadian Pacific railroad’s upgrades allow faster speeds in ND

MINOT, N.D. – As a result of infrastructure upgrades on the rail corridor adjacent to U.S. Highway 52 in North Dakota , the maximum regulated track speed will go from 49 to 60 mph.

The change, which covers most of the corridor from Drake in north-central North Dakota to the Canadian border at Portal in far northwest North Dakota, will go into effect Nov. 7.

The new regulated track speed is the result of CP's investment in modern signaling technology. Track-speed increases are strictly regulated under Federal Railroad Administration standards. The recently installed Centralized Traffic Control signaling system raises operational safety of this rail corridor to new levels. Track infrastructure and inspection standards meet or exceed all federal requirements for 60 mph operation.

Communities on the rail corridor affected by this speed change include Drake, Balfour, Bergen, Voltaire, Velva, Sawyer, Logan, Burlington, Foxholm, Carpio, Donnybrook, Kenmare, Bowbells and Flaxton. Speeds are not changing through downtown Minot, nor between Kenmare and Bowbells.

The measure will improve the public traffic flow at railroad grade crossings, said the railway.
