Volunteers to be out Saturday along the Seneca Rocks Trail

PENDLETON COUNTY, W.Va. — Sturdy hiking boots were recommended for those heading to Saturday’s planned Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area Volunteer Day and Celebration.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 28, maintenance work was on tap for volunteers along the popular Seneca Rocks Trail to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Trails System Act, a national strategy to create and manage trails across the U.S.

“They’re going to be doing all kinds of different things,” said Kevin Duncan, director of the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center.

“They’re working on redecking the platform up there which is the destination where most of the people who hike up there go and then they’ll also be doing some trail tread work and clearing brush.”

Involved in the effort were REI, the National Forest Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service, American Conservation Experience and the Student Conservation Association.

Staff members from the Monongahela National Forest, ACE and SCE would be leading the work on the Seneca Rocks Trail which covers 1.5 miles.

Volunteers, required to be over the age of 12, could register to participate HERE.

As it stands today, the National Trails System Act recognizes several types of trails: National Scenic Trails, National Historic Trails and National Recreation Trails. It also established the rail-trail concept.
