Person shot, killed on east side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — One person was shot and killed on the city’s east side Thursday morning, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department dispatch.

The deadly shooting happened just before 4 a.m. in the area of East 10th and North Rural streets. The Marion County coroner’s office performed an autopsy, but has not released the victim’s identity pending family notification. Police brought in the shooter for questioning but did not call him a suspect. They also have not called the shooting a homicide.

Although investigators have been tight-lipped, people in the area are talking.

For 9-year old Emeri Barnett, summer break means spending time with grandma. On Thursday, she tagged along with her to work: Rosie’s Riblets food truck, parked near 10th and Rural.

“I have to do cords. I have to do dishes. I have to clean the truck,” Barnett explained.

Through barbecue and spending quality time together, Rosine Lewis hopes to instill values in her granddaughter.

“I don’t want her to fall into any of those traps that sometimes, if you see, or some people are taught bad behavior. I want to teach her the real way,” Lewis said.

Which is why news of a deadly shooting right around the corner from where the two parked the food truck, troubles her.

“I thought, Oh, God. Not another one. It kind of, I’m still saddened by it,” Lewis said.

When police arrived on the scene, they found a man suffering at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not determined why he was shot.

“I’m quite sure I probably know the person because all of the kids come through and stop and talk to me,” Lewis feared.

And there’s one kid who she’s doing more than just talking to, “I never her let her out of my eyesight.”

Barnett smiled, “I’m happy because I can work and do all this stuff.”

Police are asking anyone with information on this shooting to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS.
