The Met Gala 2018 is here, and this is what we know: Amal Clooney and Rihanna are hosting the event from 9am on Tuesday morning (AEST), Kim Kardashian started a pre-event cleanse days out, and about 700 other fashion insiders and celebrities are counting themselves lucky to be invited.

The fashion world’s most exclusive event since 1948, the gala has a strict ‘no selfies’ rule and Vogue – which hosts the $US40,000 ($53,262) a head bash with New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York – keeps the guest list a closely guarded secret until the red carpet kicks off.

This year’s theme, ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’, will no doubt see fabulous interpretations and faux pas. But even A-listers who get it totally right will have to work hard to outshine those who have gone before and left a Met Gala legacy.

And the best of all was when the brightest lights from the fashion, music and acting worlds were joined by high society’s undisputed queen, Princess Diana, who wore a midnight blue Dior slip dress and chunky choker and gave the event royal cachet in 1996.
