Musical Masterworks presents Bach, Schubert and Taneyev in 27th season finale

    Edward Aaron (Hak-Soo Kim)

When a season finale descends upon us, no matter if it’s for a television show or a sports season, you expect it to be memorable. The same goes for Musical Masterworks, which will be concluding its 27th season Saturday and Sunday with seldom-performed and soul-stirring arrangements.

Among the three live performances, audiences can look forward to: Bach’s Sonata No. 4 for violin and keyboard, performed by violinist Amy Schwartz Moretti and pianist Adam Neiman; a rarely performed B-flat String Trio by Schubert and executed by violinist Aaron Boyd, violist Dimitri Murrath and Masterworks musical director Edward Arron; and to conclude the season, a titanic performance by all five musicians listed above of Sergei Taneyev's Piano Quintet, Opus 30. For dutiful Masterworks followers, this finale is sure to be a treat.

Preceding each show, concert-goers are invited to a pre-concert talk with Arron, which will start one hour before each performance, for an in-depth discussion about the composers and music featured that weekend.

Musical Masterworks, 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, First Congregational Church, 2 Ferry Road, Old Lyme; $40, $5 for students under 23 with ID; (860) 434-2252, musicalmasterworks.org.
