Cape Town - Many South Africans struggle to deal with life after retirement, as the National Treasury reports that only 6% of the country’s population are able to live comfortably and escape the high cost of living in South Africa.

Thankfully, a second career option has emerged in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). TEFL provides an income and opportunity to learn a new skill for life after retirement.

According to data collected by the TEFL academy, there was a 56% increase in TEFL by South Africans aged 65 and over between 2020 and 2021.

The TEFL Academy is a leading provider of TEFL qualifications, and Rhyan O’Sullivan, managing director at the TEFL Academy, said TEFL provided a great opportunity for a second career option.

“Using the skills they’ve learned throughout their careers, retirees are perfectly placed to become TEFL teachers. Teaching English provides an opportunity to put your profound knowledge and decades of experience to use, without demanding too much in terms of time or resources.” he said.

TEFL allows teachers the opportunity to teach from any location, anywhere around the world, either from the comfort of their own homes or to travel overseas and start afresh.

Retirees can teach from anywhere in the world, as long as they have a laptop, a webcam, internet access and a legitimate TEFL qualification

TEFL rates vary with experience. On average, TEFL teachers can earn between R190 and R560 per hour, and the TEFL course is usually completed within four to six weeks when studied full-time. The course is not limited to retirees of course, with anyone who is interested in doing TEFL eligible to apply.

The TEFL Academy provides internationally accredited and regulated online courses. In addition to the core TEFL qualification, the TEFL Academy offers their students free access to three top-up courses, containing 90 hours of optional extra learning, weekly webinars and free specialist booklets.
