Oklahoma sales tax holiday weekend starts today

From STAFF REPORTS

Sales tax is taking a holiday this weekend, giving shoppers a break on back-to-school clothes and shoes.

Many stores are opening early and staying late to accommodate customers. Penn Square Mall spokeswoman Mis Gaston expects Christmas season-size crowds.

During the tax holiday, which runs today through Sunday, most clothing items and shoes under $100 each are sold tax free. Retailers must participate.

It 'was worth it'

Last year, shoppers saved $6.8 million in sales tax on their purchases.

"Last year, I stocked up on all of our son's clothes and shoes for back to school and saved a bunch of cash," said Danielle Walker, of Piedmont. "I definitely felt that braving the crowds was worth it."
