Needham resident Dr. Heidi Fischer is honored by Charles River District Medical Society

Waltham – March 14 – Needham resident Heidi Fischer, M.D. has been honored by her physician peers as the Charles River District Medical Society’s 2016 Community Clinician of the Year, an honor reflecting her professionalism and contributions as a physician. She will receive the award at the district society’s annual meeting on April 7 at the Gore Estates in Waltham.

The Community Clinician of the Year Award was established in 1998 by the Massachusetts Medical Society to recognize a physician from each of the Society’s 20 district medical societies who has made significant contributions to his or her patients and the community.

In nominating her for the award, her colleagues noted that Dr. Fischer is a “doctor’s doctor, an excellent surgeon who gives thorough care to all her patients by practicing with high standards and motivating her staff to ensure that all her patients get the best of care.”

Board certified in ophthalmology, Dr. Fischer practiced for 10 years with Newton Wellesley Eye Associates at Newton Wellesley Hospital. In 2008 she formed her own practice of general and surgical ophthalmology, Fischer Eye Care, in Wellesley. In January of 2016, her colleague of three years took over the management of the practice, and Putnoi Fischer Eye Care was formed with the goal of continuing to provide patients with the highest quality and compassionate care.

Dr. Fischer is on staff at Newton Wellesley Hospital and is a founding member of the Surgisite Boston Surgical Center in Waltham. She is a member of the Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. As a member of the American Medical Women’s Association’s Boston chapter, she has mentored students from the state’s four medical schools.

A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia with a B.A. in biology, Dr. Fischer received her medical degree from Harvard Medical School.

On April 18 of this year, Dr. Fischer, who has personally dealt with cancer, is honored to be running the Boston Marathon to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Center’s Claudia Barr Program, a program that funds innovative basic cancer research (www.runDFMC.org).
