This Friday marks the launch of Ammanford becoming Carmarthenshire’s inaugural cultural town.

In November, The Guardian reported that Ammanford had accepted the county council’s nomination to become the first town of culture for 2018, and the first event is taking place on January 19 at The Miners Theatre.

The launch will see various talents from the area perform such as Cor Plant Encore, Dawnswyr Penrhyd, Cor Meibion Dyffryn Aman, Mess up The Mess and Jac y Do.

Co-ordinating Forums have been set up in Ammanford consisting of representatives of different organisations to prepare, expand and promote strong cultural activities throughout the year.

Menter Iaith Bro Dinefwr will lead with the co-ordinating arrangements alongside Ammanford Town Council.

Speaking to The Guardian, Mayor of Ammanford Colin Evans said: “There has been an enormous amount of planning and organising since we were named Town of Culture 2018, and throughout the year we are going to be hosting events which highlight the culture that Ammanford has to offer.”

Owain Gruffydd, the Chief Officer for the Fenter, said “We have a strong tradition of rich Welsh culture in this old mining area and we hope to celebrate that aspect regularly with local people as well as attracting contributions from outside for special events.

Development Officer Sarah Jones added: “It has been wonderful to see so many people working together and planning a varied timetable for the year ahead.

“The sub-groups are very keen to add that they have an open door and would welcome more volunteers from the community to join them.

“A number of ideas have been suggested for the year from all groups which I am sure will make for a successful year for Ammanford.

“This Friday we also launch our Culture 'selfie' campaign so look out for our 'selfie frames' and get involved in Ammanford Town of Culture 2018.”
