David Wright to Continue Rehab Assignment With Mets on the Road

David Wright will join the Mets on the road this weekend to continue his rehab assignment, the team announced Thursday.

Wright will remain on the disabled list and continue rehabbing "under the watch of our training staff," the Mets said.

New York has an off day on Thursday before beginning a six-game road trip this weekend in San Francisco against the Giants. The team then heads to Los Angeles to face the Dodgers for three games.

News of Wright's reunion with the Mets comes at the end of his 20-day minor league rehab assignment, which expires Friday. Wright began the assignment by playing with the Class-A Advanced St. Lucie Mets before heading out to the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s on Wednesday.

During 10 games at Class A, Wright hit .188 with a .454 OPS, going 6-for-32.

In Las Vegas, Wright batted .111 with one hit and four strike outs in two games

Wright last appeared in a major league game in May 2016, after struggling with multiple back, neck and shoulder injuries, including spinal stenosis.

Tuesday marked one year since the Mets shut down Wright for the season during a minor league rehab assignment, where he underwent surgery to repair the rotator cuff in his right shoulder. One month later, Wright had surgery to reduce pressure in his back.

If Wright plays again for the Mets this season, the team would have to decide if it wants his return to happen at Citi Field. The team will be on the road until Sept. 7, when they return home to face the Phillies.

Rosters can begin expanding on Saturday, when the Mets will be playing in San Francisco.

When asked Wednesday in Las Vegas by SNY's Andy Martino if he expects to play in the major leagues this year, Wright gave a confirmative answer.

"The simple answer to that is yes," said Wright, who went on to say that he doesn't know when that will happen. Wright also called himself "cautiously optimistic."
