Missouri State basketball lands Texas Tech transfer guard Josh Webster

Josh Webster (3), Brandone Francis (1) and Texas Tech celebrate after beating Purdue to reach the Elite Eight for the first time in school history.

Missouri State announced Saturday morning that Texas Tech guard Josh Webster will transfer to the university.

Webster joins the men's basketball roster after a season coming off the Texas Tech bench.

“Josh is a true point guard in every sense of the word” MSU assistant coach Jase Herl said in a press release. “He played for Hall of Fame coach Steve Green in junior college and another great coach in Chris Beard at Texas Tech. He is a natural leader and understands what it takes to win.”

The announcement also included the additions of South Florida transfer Tulio Da Silva and Nevada transfer Josh Hall.

In 26 appearances, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 0.3 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. He totaled multiple assists in six games throughout the season. His top scoring performance of the season was four in a game against Maine.

He was a part of a Texas Tech squad that reached the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

Before his first season with the Red Raiders in 2017-18, Wester played junior college ball at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.

At South Plains, Webster played under two-time NJCAA National Coach of the Year Steve Green and was a part of a team that was once ranked No. 1 in the country. His team finished in third at the 2017 NJCAA Championship.

During the season, he averaged 9.1 points and 7.1 assists per game while shooting 58.4 percent. His assist-to-turnover ratio ranked second in the nation.

Before joining South Plains, Webster won a high school state championship in Missouri with Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis.

As a graduate transfer, Webster will be eligible to play immediately with one season of eligibility.

He joins a backcourt consisting of Josh Hall, Jarred Dixon, Ryan Kreklow and Ross Owens.

The transfer adds to a group of newcomers under new head coach Dana Ford, including Keandre Cook, Kabir Mohammed, Jan Wojcik and Szymon Wojcik. The active roster will also include former Kickapoo High star Jared Ridder, who transferred to MSU from Xavier before his freshman season.

Darnell Butler Jr. announced on Twitter on Saturday morning that he is leaving the Missouri State basketball program.
