WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH/CNN) — The Spring-like weather probably has students thinking about Prom season. Get ready parents! It can be a really expensive night. Some people will spend more than a thousand dollars on prom but there are ways to save a little money without sacrificing style.

“I know other people spent a lot of money, flowers, like corsage, boutonniere, it adds up,” said Liana Antonelli, a University of New Haven freshman.

Starting with the elaborate ways to ask a sweetheart to the big dance. Last year, according to Visa, the average cost of a prom-posal was $324 dollars. In addition to the creative invites, teens spend money on dresses and tuxes, limos, tickets, flowers, pictures and events before and after the actual dance. Which in 2015 averaged out to 919 dollars.

Prom planning can be a good opportunity to teach high schoolers some money lessons. Sit down and craft a budget. South Windsor’s Rachael Dyer saved money finding an oversized bridesmaid dress.

“They were able to alter it and make it smaller, it was a gorgeous bridesmaid dress and it ended up being maybe $115 dollars,” Dyer said.

Also determine what costs teens will be responsible for and which ones parents will handle and stay firm.

Teens can trim prom costs by sharing a limo with friends and taking their own prom pictures — now that so many have smartphones. Another way to save is on flowers. Try the grocery store for inexpensive flowers – or start calling around – give your local flower shop a chance to give you a good deal!
