CUMBRIA'S university will play host to one of six contemporary pieces of art commissioned in response to the Lake District becoming a World Heritage site.
The University of Cumbria’s Ambleside campus will stage the artworks, which include performance, sculpture, virtual reality and an inflatable installation form the programme for Lakes Ignite 2018.
The Buried Moon exhibits at the Ambleside campus in May 2018 and is a three-part artwork exploring the landscape and cultural history of Lake District geology. It will be expressed through a performance by the Strange Names Collective, a photographic exhibition and an animated virtual reality experience that will allow viewers to drift below the surface into the deep interior of the earth.
Roddy Hunter, director Institute of the Arts, University of Cumbria said: “Our Ambleside campus location lends itself perfectly to host this exhibition celebrating the Lake District’s stunning landscape. Not only is our campus based in the heart of the national park, the innovative and novel execution of the exhibition symbolises the original and inventive nature of the university.”
The Lake District National Park was awarded World Heritage Site status for its cultural landscape in July 2017 and the Lakes Ignite commissions are responding to the theme Cultural Landscape.
The commissions relate to one, or all of the three themes for which the World Heritage Status inscription was given:
Identity – the way man’s interaction with the landscape has shaped what we see today
Inspiration – a landscape that has inspired, and continues to inspire, artists, writers and visitors
Conservation – a landscape that is worth preserving for future generations
Usha Mistry from Lakes Culture, said: “Lakes Ignite is about bringing together tourism and the arts. The Lake District has a defined culture, rich in music, theatre, poetry and painting. We want to show that Cumbria is also a great place to experience new contemporary culture and that the iconic landscapes of the Lake District continue to influence artists today.”
The installations will be located at venues including Langdale Estates, Rheged, Ambleside Salutation Hotel and Spa, University of Cumbria Ambleside campus, Blackwell, Arts and Crafts House and Grizedale Forest.
The visual art installations will be on view at different locations from January 2018 through to July 2018.
