PUNE: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said cows needed to be protected and each family should adopt one.
“Our country once worshipped cows. But today people are not ready to look after them,” he said addressing a function organized to present the Moropant Pingale Go Seva awards instituted by the Go Vidnyan Sanshodhan Sanstha and Dadra Nagarhaveli Mukti Sangram Samiti.
He said, “The mentality of the western countries is that of consumption when they look at the cows.
Vut we worship all living creatures.”
Bhagwat said an observation by the jailers in different parts of the country suggested that criminals involved in cow protection and conservation activities in prisons “have shown positive behavioural changes”.
He said, “Various projects are going on for conservation and protection of cows across the country. Society should come together for the protection of cows. Every family should come forward to adopt one cow each.”
“ We need this kind of attitude. Of course there can be issues in the urban areas. But that should not deter us from protecting cows,” he added.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief said that it was not the Indian tradition to neglect animals.

“But this is currently happening. We know the importance of animals from ancient times, which has been approved by science,” he said.
“The ‘desi’ cows have higher demand in western countries for a long time because of their higher yield and milk,” he added.
