Christopher Newport University’s Board of Visitors approved a 2.98 percent increase in tuition for students for the 2016-17 school year during a board meeting Friday.
The tuition raise, which comes in at $228 for in-state and $552 for out-of-state undergraduates, is the smallest percentage increase in 14 years.
Other fees are also rising: room and board and a fee for non-academic activities will each go up $300 per student. A “capital fee” will also increase $4 for out-of-state students.
In total, in-state undergraduates will pay $23,968, a 3.58 percent increase over 2015-16, and those coming from out-of-state will pay $35,594, a 3.36 percent increase.
State funding for higher education increased significantly in the 2016-18 budget, which includes language requesting institutions to “seek to minimize tuition and free increases for in-state undergraduate students.” CNU officials said the increase is a reflection of that.
“We take this action in appreciation for the strong support of the General Assembly and Gov. McAuliffe and the importance of keeping higher education affordable for the citizens of Virginia,” President Paul Trible said in a news release from the university.
The approved resolution also raises undergraduate and graduate application fees to $65, a $15 increase.
In total, all of the projected fee changes are estimated to net the university more than $2.7 million in increased revenue. The resolution says the revenue will help fund 3 percent raises for faculty and staff, the hiring of four full-time faculty positions and more to support the academic efforts of the university.
