Lineup set for Sunset Jazz at Newport series

Thousands of jazz enthusiasts are expected during the seventh annual Sunset Jazz at Newport summer series, running July 6 through Sept. 14 at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel & Spa.

The series will feature performances by instrumental artists and vocalists on 11 consecutive Wednesday nights.

Ken Peplowski and the Chuck Redd Quintet will kick off the event July 6.

Ernie Andrews will be backed by saxophonist Rickey Woodard, pianist Tateng Katindig, bassist Richard Simon and drummer Roy McCurdy on July 13.

Australian music group James Morrison Band will play July 20.

The Four Freshmen, who were one of the top vocal groups of the 1950s and continue to perform harmony-based songs, will play July 27.

Pianist, composer and Grammy Award-winning arranger Bill Cunliffe will perform Latin jazz from his album “Imaginacion,” with vocalist Carol Bach-Y-Rita, on Aug. 3.

Guitarist John Pizzarelli will perform with his quartet Aug. 10.

Drummer Jeff Hamilton, who joined the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra at age 19, will perform Aug. 17 with his organ trio, which includes jazz musicians Akiko Tsuruga and Graham Dechter.

Rebecca Kilgore, a musician interpreting music of the Great American Songbook, will play with her quintet Aug. 24.

Byron Stripling, trumpeter and artistic director with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra in Ohio, will perform with the Bobby Floyd Quartet for an evening of sounds reminiscent of Louis Armstrong on Aug. 31.

Jazz vocalist Barbara Morrison, who will celebrate her 67th birthday Sept. 10 as part of a tradition at Sunset Jazz at Newport, will perform interpretations of jazz, blues, gospel and pop songs Sept. 7. Joining Morrison will be the Rickey Woodard Quartet.

Closing the series will be Grammy- and Emmy-winning composer, arranger and performer Gordon Goodwin with the Little Phat Band on Sept. 14.

Season tickets for 11 concerts are $265 for general open seating, $392 for reserved seating and $502 for reserved individual seats. General admission is $25 to $49 for each Wednesday night except for The Four Freshmen, John Pizzarelli Quartet and Gordon Goodwin’s Little Phat Band. Those tickets range from $30 to $53.
