For Erykah Badu, towering hats have long been a style signature. When her new web shop, Badu World Market, launched last month, the artist explained a bit about why she’s drawn to such oversize headpieces. “I’m known for these really huge hats that I wear,” she told Vogue. “What makes these hats unique is the size of the bowl of the hat—some milliners call it the block of the hat. I’m known for having a huge block. I’m from Texas, and ten gallon hats ain’t enough for us.”

In between the quarantine concert sessions that she’s been streaming with her band live from her living room, Badu has been reaching back into the depths of her closet into what is evidently a veritable treasure trove of weird and wonderful fashion finds. Just a few days ago, Badu posted a selfie to Instagram dressed in a full-coverage felt hat (it was originally a birthday gift from some years back) that looked something like a medieval helmet. With its face-covering front flap, the design was uncannily appropriate for our strange new reality in which self-isolation has become the norm. In the caption, Badu leaned into this warrior vibe, declaring that she was ready for war. In a hat like this, clearly she’s just as prepared for social distancing, too.
