In just a few weeks Explore Park in Roanoke County will open up its expanded camping options for the public.

It's all part of a $4.5 million effort by the county to bring more people and more experiences to the county.

Right now crews are building a bath house on site that will service cabins, yurts and RV sites. It's part of a partnership the county has with local business to build cabins like those built by Don's Cab-Inns.

The craftsman, Don Harrison, said he can build one of his green pod cabins by hand in just one month.

"It does have that natural outdoorsy smell and feel," he said, looking around his cabin. "So I just want them to feel really comfortable and feel like they've had a real outdoor experience."

Over the next two years Harrison will build 13 pod cabins and nine yurts for the park.

Explore Park already offers some camping options including primitive sites by the river as well as tents and tepees.

Explore Park will have the site ready for a Ribbon cutting for the site on November 9. Interested campers can begin booking now.
