ROSEBURG, Ore. — Quincy Harding Jr. of Colorado Springs is a student at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. He’s a basketball player who just started school there this week.

He could hear the shots being fired Thursday morning in the mass shooting that left 10 dead and seven injured. The shooter was also dead.

Harding spoke to FOX31 Denver anchor Jeremy Hubbard via Facetime on Thursday night.

He said he was in a classroom in the next building over, about 100 feet away from where the gunman opened fire. Out of the blue he started hearing 15 to 20 gunshots.

“Oh, it was like a movie, you know.? It was just so fast and unexpected, you wouldn’t expect that in a little town like that. I actually couldn’t even answer the phone because the police had us detained in a classroom, and it was like a good hour-and-a-half before I could get on the phone with my dad. I was like really freaking out and stuff,” he said.

His dad, Quincy Harding Sr., said, “I got a text from him probably about 30 minutes later, and he was saying that the gunman … he could hear more shots and I told him to turn his phone off and hide.”

The younger Quincy said he doesn’t yet know the names of any of the people killed. But he fears that because it’s such a small campus, they are people he’ll know.
