KENT, Ohio – Kent State remained unbeaten at the M.A.C. Center with a 75-65 victory over Oakland in the final game of the Kent State Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (2-2) had four players score in double-figures. The starting backcourt of Megan Carter (18 points) and Asiah Dingle (14 points) combined for 32 points. Ali Poole had a season-high 15 points and Lindsey Thall added a career-high 11 points.
"I'm pleased to get the win," said head coach Todd Starkey. "I thought we did a few things better than we did yesterday. We had better ball movement and better screening. I thought we did a good job of making the extra pass. But we made some costly turnovers and execution errors. Right now, we have to live with the learning curve with this young team with a lot of freshmen playing big minutes. They're starting to learn and are going to continue to improve."
Kent State made nine three-pointers for the second time this season after hitting that mark just once a year ago. Poole and Thall drained three triples each and Mariah Modkins added two three-pointers.
Carter, who is averaging a team-high 17.8 points per game, matched her career-high with six assists and grabbed five rebounds. Poole had seven rebounds to lead Kent State on the boards
Oakland (1-4) kept the game competitive with a 10-for-21 performance from the three-point line. The Flashes did a much better job of contesting shots inside of the arc, blocking seven shots and holding the Golden Grizzlies to just 10-for-39. The seven blocked shots is tied for the second-most since Starkey took over prior to the 2016-17 season. Thall swatted four shots and Merissa Barber-Smith added two rejections and six rebounds in just 11 minutes of action.
Kent State hosts Youngstown State on Tuesday at 5 p.m. to conclude a stretch of three home games in four days.
