Edinburgh racer picks up win at Brownstown

Chad Stapleton of Edinburgh won his fourth Indiana Pro late model feature of the year on July 14 at Brownstown Speedway. Stapleton outdueled Steve Peeden of Paragon and Steven Godsey of Bedford for the top spot. Raymond Humphrey of Bloomington and Skyller Lewis of Brownstown completed the top five drivers.

Stapleton’s car is sponsored by Sub-Surface of Indiana, Burns Farms, Jason Clarkson Logging, Print Worx and Willy’s Carburetor.

Devin Gilpin of Columbus made another appearance in Brownstown’s Victory Lane when he won the super late model feature worth $2,000. Tanner English of Benton, Kentucky, was second, followed by David Webb of Nicholasville, Kentucky, Stapleton and Bloomington’s Shelby Miles.

Tyler Nicely of Owensboro, Kentucky, won the American Modified Series event, pocketing $2,000 for the win. A total of 40 modifieds participated in the night’s activities. Trent Young of Crofton, Kentucky; Adam Stricker of Batavia, Ohio; Scott James of Lawrenceburg and Brian Shaw of Robinson, Illinois rounded out the top five.

Mike Fields of Scottsburg took the $1,000-to-win super stock feature, winning over Colton Sullivan of Columbus, Jason Hehman of Brownstown, Tim Schumpe of Vallonia and Aubrey Eagan of Bedford.

Rick Gumm of Tampico won his first pure stock feature of the season. Derek Clegg of Nabb was second to Gumm, with Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee, Zachary Stalker of Heltonville and Keaton Streeval of Edinburgh rounding out the top five.

Brownstown will be off tonight for the annual setup for the Jackson County Fair. The next event will be on Thursday, with a fair event featuring the Indiana Pro Late Models, modifieds, super stocks and hornets. For more info, visit brownstownspeedway.com.

Hupp wins at Twin Cities

Logan Hupp of Columbus won his second 410 sprint car feature of the year on July 14 at Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. Hupp was followed across the finish line by Cole Ketcham of Muncie, Scott Hampton of Greenfield, J.J. Hughes of Columbus and Drew Abel of North Vernon.

Marty O’Neal of Spencer returned to Victory Lane at Twin Cities, winning the crate late model feature. Billy Green of Walton, Kentucky was second, with North Vernon’s Tyler Collins finishing in third. Brad Rickels of Verona, Kentucky, and Paul Ortman of Seymour completed the top five.

Jeremy Helton of Paris Crossing was victorious in the super stock main event. Ross Smith of Columbus placed second, with Craig Markel of Columbus, Kelly Davis of Madison and Randy Gilland Sr. of North Vernon completing the top five.

Mark Bruce of Commiskey took the pure stock feature, and Seymour’s Donnie Modesty took the top honors in the hornet main event.

Cummins takes Bloomington

Kyle Cummins of Princeton won the 410 non-wing sprint car feature on July 13 at Bloomington Speedway. Robert Ballou was second, with Jeff Bland Jr., Isaac Chapple and Andrew Prather trailing the winner across the finish line.

Jason Hehman of Brownstown picked up another win in the super stock feature, taking the win over Steve Hollars, Zach Sasser, Steve Hawkins and Chip Slagle.

Jeff Wimmenauer of New Whiteland captured the RaceSaver sprint car feature. A trio of Bloomington drivers trailed Wimmenauer to the checker, with Luke Bland, John Paynter Jr. and Terry Arthur finishing second through fourth. Patrick Kren was fifth.

This week in racing history

From 50 years ago in 1968 at Bloomington, it was Orville Yeadon taking the win over Calvin Gilstrap, Bob Kinser, Jim Johnson and Sheldon Kinser.

In 1968 at the 25th Street Speedway in Columbus, hometown driver Gene Petro took the late model feature, winning over Don Hobbs, Joe King, Ira Bastin and Jim Haley.

At Brownstown Speedway in 1968, the winner was Gene Sutton over Ray Godsey, Jim Haley, Jerry Brinegar and Gene Dalton.

From 40 years ago in 1978 at Twin Cities, the hobby stock feature winner was Chuck Gilpin. The rest of the top-five finishers were Bruce Steinert, Bud Seymour, Russ Smiley and Troy Burton.

In 1978 at Brownstown, Ray Godsey won the late model feature race over Dennis Boknecht, Junior Pace, Butch Isaacs and John Davis. Doc Jewell continued to dominate the hobby stock class, winning the main event over Tony Moore, Roger Hehman, Daryl Herbert and Jacky Taylor.

From 30 years ago in 1988 at Bloomington Speedway, it was Kevin Briscoe taking the feature win in the sprint car division. Todd Shields was second, followed by Jeff Gordon, Randy Kinser and Joey Saldana.

This weekend in 1988 at Twin Cities, it was Lee Fleetwood winning the late model feature over Garry Mahoney, Willie Sallee, Jim Patterson and Dill Whittymore. Phil Fultz won his third straight street stock feature at Twin Cities over Tim Clark, Taulby Donnell, Buford Burton and Eddie Kindred.

In 1988 at Brownstown, it was Jim Curry taking the late model feature over Steve Barnett, Noel Witcher, Doug Ault and Paul Shafer. Randy Petro won the street stock main event over Scott Patman, Mark Barber, Billy Filburn and Earl Plessinger. Roger Bense took the top honors in the bomber class over Ray Hughes, Ron Hoover, Bret Ezzo and Kevin Sebastian.

From 20 years ago in 1998 at Brownstown, the winner was Don O’Neal in the late model feature over Jim Curry, Mike Jewell, John Gill and Ernie Barrow. Tim Clark was victorious in the street stock feature over Mike Fields, Perry Bruce, Gregg O’Neill and Steve Hunt. Levi Ray Godsey won the bomber feature over Tim Prince, Ray Godsey Jr., David Hill and Charlie Stevens Jr.
