Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, & G-Eazy Sample A Classic Magnolia Shorty Song On “Wobble Up”

They flip the New Orleans bounce music staple “Monkey On Tha D$ck.”

Chris Brown linked up with Nicki Minaj and G-Eazy for his new single, “Wobble Up,” and it draws from a rich history of New Orleans bounce music. Produced by J.R. Rotem and Theron Thomas, the song prominently samples “Monkey On Tha D$ck,” a 1997 track by the late Magnolia Shorty.

The Cash Money signee can be heard on the song’s pre-chorus, rapping:

Monkey on the dick, monkey on the dick (Ooh, ooh)
Monkey on the dick, monkey on the dick

Magnolia Shorty was part of Cash Money in the ‘90s, alongside artists like Lil Wayne, Juvenile, and Turk. Her debut EP, Monkey On Tha D$ck, dropped in 1997, marking the only commercially released project of her career. She was killed in a drive-by shooting in 2010, but remains a celebrated star in New Orleans’ bounce music scene. However, much of her catalog has not made the transition to streaming services and digital retailers.

The Louisiana rapper is best known for the non-album single, “Smoking Gun,” which Drake sampled on “In My Feelings” last year. That song, along with “Nice For What,” have been credited with bringing the mostly regional bounce music style to a more global audience.

Although none of the artists on “Wobble Up” mention Magnolia Shorty directly, Nicki Minaj has been part of Cash Money (through Lil Wayne’s Young Money) for her entire career.
