TRACK AND FIELD

Baker boys, McGill girls dominate Mobile County championships

Baker head coach Shondrey Young was worried about whether or not his team was going to be able to have a strong showing after the first day of the Mobile County Track and Field Championships, held Tuesday and Wednesday at the University of South Alabama.

On day two, though, he had nothing to worry about as the Hornets cranked things up a notch and trounced Blount rounded out the top five with 64 and 61.50 points respectively.

Baker got the win thanks to some clutch performances from Jonathan Davis, who, after winning the 800 meters in day one with a 2 minute, 1.16 second clocking, came back and finished a surprising second in the 400 (51.21) and winning the 3,200 (10:03.21); and Zion Mickles, who not only was third in the 800 (2:02.99), but came back in day two to win the 400 (50.14).

Those performances, along with a big win in the shot by Graham Collins of McGill-Toolen, who won the 110 and 300-meter hurdles (14.19/39.17) and finished second in the long jump (22-7 ¼). Collins also finished fifth in the high jump (6-4).

“Colin was able to get 20 points by himself,” Young said. “He had personal records in every event (shot, discus, and javelin). Overall, it was a team effort. I had a long talk with the kids and I let them know that I wasn’t pleased with their performances from the day before. We took no prisoners today, but we still have a lot to prove.”

As for McGill-Toolen’s Collins, the 14.19 in the 110-meter high hurdles was a personal best, with the help of a slight over-limit tailwind.

“It was just a matter of getting over the hurdles and getting my form down,” he said. “I felt real low, and I felt fast between the hurdles. It’s really a motivation for sectionals and state.”

Blount were fourth and fifth with 76 and 48.50 points respectively.

McGill-Toolen was led by girls’ MVP Michelle Roca, who won the 100 and 300-meter hurdles (15.28 /45.19), and also finished second in the 800 (2:23.46) and anchored the winning 4 X 400-meter relay.

In addition, Hannah Daffin had a double win in the shot (39-0¼) and discus (119-4).

“It was two days of awesomeness,” said Yellow Jacket coach Drew Bentley. “All you hope that would have happened, happened. We just had win after win. With Grace getting three wins, and Caroline Huff winning the 400 and placing second in the 200 as well as a personal best in the long jump, plus Michelle winning both hurdle races, finishing second in the 800 and anchoring the 4 X 400, they really stepped up. For a coach, it was fun to watch.”

Other notable performances included:

-- Murphy's Aryn McDowell winning the girls' long jump (17-9) and the triple jump (37-8 ½).
-- McGill-Toolen's David Dolan winning the boys' pole vault (14-0).
