SC Directs Centre to Set Up Disability Sensitisation Committee in Workplaces

The apex court ruled that the committee to address grievances of PwDs will be similar to committees such as the one on 'Sexual Harassment at Work Place' and would have to established at all public and private organisations.

New Delhi: A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre to establish guidelines to set up Persons with Disability (PWD) Sensitisation Committee in every public and private organisation in line with the ‘sexual harassment at work place’ committees.

A bench of Justice AK Sikri and Justice Ashok Bhushan was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking implementation of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and provide facilities for differently-abled in government buildings and public places.

The apex court ruled that the committee to address grievances of PwDs will be similar to committees such as the one on 'Sexual Harassment at Work Place' and would have to established at all public and private organisations.

The Centre has been directed to come up with a draft of the guidelines for such a committee.

The court has granted six months’ time to the government to adhere to the orders. The bench would be scrutiniSing the progress made after six months.

The court has also sought a status report on framework of co-ordination mechanism between the Centre and the states, in regard to implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

The Centre and the states will file their respective status reports within three months.
