Man named in deadly Mobile hit and run, carjacking incident

Mobile Police Department named Wednesday the suspect involved in a deadly hit and run, carjacking that resulted in the death of a Mobile teacher.

Baly Hobson, 25, was named by Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste at a press conference Wednesday afternoon as the suspect involved in the incident the previous day.

Police were initially called to a domestic dispute involving Hobson at a Walmart on Schillinger Road. Hobson is alleged to have been guiding his girlfriend around the store by knifepoint, according to Mobile Police Department.

Hobson fled the store's parking lot in his girlfriend's car after police were called to investigate his unusual behavior. He later drove directly into a vehicle being driven by Charlotte Skoda, a longtime teacher at the Faith Academy school in West Mobile. Skoda was killed at the scene, according to law enforcement.

Hobson then stole the vehicle of a passerby that stopped to help. He was arrested five miles away at a Dollar General on Three Notch Road.

Baly was out on probation for four offences committed in June. Those include assault and disorderly conduct charges. He pled guilty during a hearing in early August.

Also noted on Baly's record was that he was on bail as a fugitive from justice, namely that he was wanted in Florida for striking an officer on Aug. 8 this year, the same day he was granted probation.
