Thor has proven his worth in the Marvel Universe time and time again, snatching victory from the jaws of certain defeat. Armed with his hammer Mjolnir, Thor has dedicated himself to protecting the Earth from all manner of foe, whether it be Asgardian menace, cosmic deity, or powerful supervillains.

While there are some who would say Thor is a tad overrated, he's always managed to save the day even when the odds were completely against him. However, there have been some foes that Thor has faced that should have defeated him but were never able to.

10 SHOULD BE ABLE TO BEAT THOR: Absorbing Man

Marvel Absorbing Man 1 Cropped

The criminal Crusher Creel was given a potion that allowed him to absorb the properties of anything he touched, superhuman strength, and a magical ball and chain. Naming himself the Absorbing Man, Creel would go after Thor on Loki's behalf, as well as battling the Avengers alongside the Wrecking Crew. While he's not the sharpest crayon in the drawer, his powers make him extremely formidable.

Absorbing Man's powers allows him to pretty much become anything he touches and that should allow him to beat Thor easily. If Mjolnir hits him, he can just become Uru metal, becoming as durable as the metal. Or he could touch some adamantium and then go after Thor. He's proven strong enough to hurt Thor, so beating him shouldn't be impossible.

9 WHY HE CAN'T: He Is So Dumb

Absorbing Man Absorbing Steel From A Wrecking Ball

Absorbing Man can be one of the most dangerous foes around but he's just not that smart. He doesn't really plan ahead and he doesn't think on the fly very well. His plans are usually either made by others, in which case he's not smart enough to really do anything to change them, or extremely simple. His lack of forethought is yet another weakness of him.

If he prepared more for his fights, he could easily defeat anyone he comes up against but because he doesn't, he has to absorb materials on the fly and isn't as tough as he could be if he had any kind of prior planning put into things.

8 SHOULD BE ABLE TO BEAT THOR: Enchantress

An image of Enchantress reclining on a throne covered with trinkets and trophies

A powerful Asgardian sorceress, Enchantress isn't a god but that doesn't make her any less deadly. Devoting her life to the study of magic, Enchantress often uses her feminine wiles to manipulate her foes but has way more in her bag of tricks than just that sort of thing. While Thor has never fallen for her charms, her magic is another story.

Thor is a great hero and would give someone the shirt off his back but he's also kind of dumb and this should be something Enchantress can easily capitalize on. With power like hers, tricking Thor should be easy, moving him to where she needs him to be to destroy him.

7 WHY SHE CAN'T: She Takes The Wrong Approach

Enchantress

While Enchantress doesn't have to depend on her looks and things of that nature to trick her opponents, more often than not she falls back on that sort of thing and that's the exact wrong way to go about it with Thor. He's not going to fall for that sort of trick and yet Enchantress always tries it.

On top of that, she always tries to use seduced lackeys to do her bidding, forgetting that anyone who is weak-willed enough to be seduced isn't exactly the best person in the universe to trust with any kind of job, especially fighting someone as formidable as Thor.

6 SHOULD BE ABLE TO BEAT THOR: The Celestials

the celestial

The Celestials are a race of cosmic giants, traveling the universe and influencing the evolution of the lesser life forms they come across. The creators of the Eternals, the Celestials are monstrously powerful, able to destroy planets with but a single thought. Thor has tangled with the Celestials on many occasions and has always found a way to come out on top.

This really shouldn't have been possible--even with his enchanted Celestial killing ax Jarnbjorn, Thor shouldn't be able to get close enough to a Celestial to use the weapon. Before he took up Jarnbjorn again, it should have been even harder, since even mighty Mjolnir couldn't pierce a Celestial's shell.

5 WHY THEY CAN'T: They Don't See Him As A Significant Threat

Celestials

The Celestials rarely notice anything except what they want to notice, and this is a huge problem for them in a battle against what they perceive as lesser beings. The Celestials don't care about anything but the things they care about and treat everything else like insects--insignificant bothers to be ignored. They believe in their own strength so much, they think that nothing can phase them.

Thor has always been able to surprise them, using his power and skill to catch them off guard and stop them when they come calling. If they only learned to look beyond their goals at what their foes can do to them instead of treating threats like nothing, they would have ended Thor long ago.

4 SHOULD BE ABLE TO BEAT THOR: Hela

Hela

Hela is the Asgardian Goddes of Death and one of the most powerful beings in all of the Nine Realms. Skilled, powerful, and smart, she often finds Thor meddling in her affairs. The two have battled it out on more than one occasion, with Thor getting the better of Hela, even if this is highly illogical.

While the God of Thunder is powerful and Mjolnir is one of the greatest weapons around, there's no way he should be able to beat Hela. She's the Goddess of Death, ruler of the realm of the Norse dead. Her powers and the forces she can access should give her a major edge over Thor.

3 WHY SHE CAN'T: She's Not As Good As She Thinks She Is

Thor vs Hela

Hela has an extremely high opinion of herself and while she has some good reasons for this, it's caused her to make a lot of mistakes in battling her brother Thor. While the MCU version of Hela was a great fighter, the comic version is not as good and this has been a problem for her as she has constantly tried to fight her brother to a standstill.

Instead of falling back on her greater power or using her armies as a distraction, she's constantly trying to best Thor in battle personally and this is a huge mistake. She thinks that she is Thor's equal in combat and this just isn't the case at all.

2 SHOULD BE ABLE TO BEAT THOR: Loki

Loki with Mjolnir on the Brooklyn Bridge in Marvel Comics

The Asgardian God of Mischief, Loki is Thor's greatest adversary. Their relationship has had many peaks and valleys over the years, with the two either acting like the brothers they are or at each other throats. When they are fighting each other, their rivalry has led them to massive brawls with each other, as both men do their best to stop the other.

As befitting a God of Mischief, there have been many versions of Loki over the years but all of them have been powerful magic users and better than one would expect in combat. The fact that Thor has defeated Loki so many times seems flabbergasting, especially since there are few beings in the universe who know Thor like Loki does.

1 WHY HE CAN'T: He Thinks Thor Is Stupid

King Loki

Loki's biggest problem in his battles against Thor is that he thinks Thor is way less intelligent than he actually is. Now, Thor definitely isn't the smartest man in Asgard but he's not nearly as dumb as Loki thinks he is and that's a big problem for the God of Mischief--most of his plans against his brother presuppose that he's the dumbest person around.

Someone like Loki should have learned by now not to make that mistake, but he never has, constantly underestimating his brother's intelligence and paying the price for it.
