Zoe Saldaña and Diego Luna lend their voices to the upcoming animated comedy “The Book Life,” joining a blockbuster cast that includes Channing Tatum, Christina Applegate, Cheech Marin, Placido Domingo and “Instructions Not Included” actor/director Eugenio Derbez.

This new project will be the first animation work for the two Latino actors, who rose to fame with “Center Stage” and “Y Tu Mamá También.” Saldaña and Luna also worked together in the movie “The Terminal” starring veteran actor Tom Hanks.

“The Book of Life”, which will be released in October 2014, is described as the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. He embarks in an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

“Pans Labyrinth” director Guillermo del Toro is set to produce the feature for 20th Century Fox Animation and Reel FX Animation. He is joined by Jorge Gutierrez, the co-creator of TV’s “El Tigre: The Many Adventures of Manny Rivera” as director, and Doug Langdale as the screenwriter.

Rounding out the cast are Ice Cube, Kate Del Castillo, Ron Perlman, Hector Elizondo, Ana de la Reguera, comedian Gabriel Iglesias, radio personality Ricardo “El Mandril” Sanchez and Danny Trejo.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studios are promising a “fresh take on popular pop songs.” The original score and songs, though, will be composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, who did the music for Oscar-winning movies “Brokeback Mountain” and “Babel.” Santaolalla is currently touring with Argentinean band Bajofondo, which was just nominated for a Latin Grammy.
