Following Thursday’s landmark hearing, the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on whether or not to recommend Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.
The committee vote is expected to dominate the TV news cycle on Friday. Should Kavanaugh receive the necessary support to move forward as the nominee, the full Senate will assemble on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at which point a vote will be held to determine whether Kavanaugh will be the United States’ newest Supreme Court Justice.
The Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote on Friday follows testimonies from both Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused the circuit court judge of sexual assault. In her powerful testimony on Thursday, Ford said she was “terrified” to “relive this trauma in front of the world,” but was “100 percent certain that it was Kavanaugh who assaulted her. “It is not my responsibility to determine whether Mr. Kavanaugh deserves to sit on the Supreme Court,” she said, but it is “my responsibility is to tell you the truth.”
Kavanaugh, meanwhile, insisted that his confirmation process has become “national disgrace,” saying the allegations have “destroyed my family” and sullied his reputation. “The Constitution gives the Senate an important role in the confirmation process, but you have replaced advice and consent with search and destroy,” he opined.
The vote is scheduled to begin at promptly 9:30 am ET. Hit PLAY on the YouTube video above to watch live coverage (courtesy of CBS News), then drop a comment with your own thoughts below.
This statemment was imparative. “Constitution gives the Senate an important role in the confirmation process, but you have replaced advice and consent with search and destroy,” he opined.”
I agree with Judge Kavanaugh this is a sham.
Yes, Senator Jeff Flake is an American hero.
Watching all the unconditional support this man got from several other men disgusted me. And they have the balls to wonder why she didn’t report it 36 years ago, when she was basically still a child. This last year has really tainted my view of men…. I now wonder if they’re all secretly disgusting pigs.
Yes he is a good man
In no way shape or form is he a good man. He is scum just like president grab em by the p****
… but you’re somehow fine with all the unconditional support she got from women despite a complete lack of any evidence of credible witnesses backing up her story, plus all the weird lies (she can’t fly to DC yet she’s travelled the world many, many times by Jet)? Ok then.
You’re right. All sexual assaults are now legally and morally required to take place in public in front of someone ‘credible’. Who, btw, is not allowed to intervene or assist, but must stand as a witness for the victim. Because, you know, if it happens in private then the victim *must be lying*.
If you can’t see how stupid that sounds, then please, be quiet.
I wonder too but then I read amazing comments from men or talk to my own husband and I know they aren’t all disgusting pigs.
Brett Kavanaugh should not be confirmed he is not a good representative for the Supreme Court. His behavior at the hearing yesterday so him as a partison and volitional personality. He doesn’t meet the requirements for a Supreme Court Justice.
If he is not, & does not, please state that according to what particular behavior yesterday?Thank you very much.
When he acted like a toddler being punished for the first time, not the type of person who should be getting apponted to a lifetime judgeship.
Or like someone that has been trashed by media, attacked personally and his family harassed and insulted for the last three weeks? Yeah, his bad for having an honest moment of rational frustration and infuriation at the whole thing.
Flipside: had he not reacted with genuine emotion he would have been equally criticized as being a cold calculating sociopath etc etc. Your tone and choice of words make it perfectly clear how you felt about this man long before he said a single word yesterday. Please don’t waste your time or ours pretending otherwise.
If a woman had the same reaction, she would be called hysterical & unfit just to name a few.
All am sure of is that if he isn’t confirmed the Dems will go bat crap crazy against the next nominee. These are the same people who supported Clinton throughout his career all the way back to Arkansas. I don’t really care about Kavanaugh but think crucifying him for teenage mistakes that led to no actual crime is ridiculous. I have doubts about Ford’s accusations because how did she escape from two older teens and why didn’t she come forward when he first became a judge. Apparently the “incident” wasn’t crippling enough to slow her career.
There is so much ignorance in your post it’s astounding. First of all, it did lead to a crime as sexual assault is a crime. Attempted rape is a crime. He was 17, not 13. He was old enough to know better. He just clearly didn’t care. She explained how she escaped 2 teenage boys. They were so drunk when one jumped on the other it knocked them off balance and she ran when they were down. Ford din’t even want to come forward in the first place. She came forward anonymously and her letter was leaked so why would she come forward when he was made a judge? There’s a big difference between a federal judge and a Supreme Court judge. She couldn’t sit back and let the man who attacked her become one of the most powerful men in the country. That’s not really a hard concept to grasp. If you doubt her accusations, but believe his BS story about the Renate Alumnus mention in his yearbook just being a group of teenage guys getting together to honor that girl as one of their buds then you clearly lack any common sense and critical reasoning skills. If you believe that Kavanaugh was lying about that then it puts his character into question and also means he lied while under oath, which is a crime as well and should automatically disqualify him from the Supreme Court. Any judge sitting on that court should have a crime free record, not just never been charged with a crime, but never committed a crime. This judge clearly does not meet those qualifications. Kavanaugh has been no more crucified than Ford has, yet you made no mention of how being outed as a sexual assault victim to the entire nation has affected her life. I think it’s painfully obvious the only person you care about in this situation is Kavanaugh. You think he’s getting a raw deal because how dare he be held responsible for trying to rape someone when he was 17. He was just a kid, right? Never mind the fact that Ford was 15 and dealing with the trauma of being assaulted. The fact that you somehow discredit her testimony because she worked hard to make something of herself is also disgusting. Yes, sexual assault is traumatic and it can cause a person to give up, but I’m sure there are plenty of instances when a woman is assaulted, but refuses to allow a selfish pig to have any more control of her life and uses that as motivation to better her life. That is likely what Ms. Ford did. She didn’t let the assault stop her and the fact that she was strong enough to overcome it and build the career and reputation she has is commendable. It’s disgusting you think that somehow discounts her allegations. Her character has been challenged, but there is no proof she has ever lied or done anything disingenuous whereas Kavanaugh has lied and refused to answer simple questions. Also, if you believe tha he was a virgin until well after college I have a bridge I could sell you.
Drunken groping by a minor is scarcely more than an error in judgement. And Ford’s claim that she escaped when the guys fell makes me wonder how she got out. If they locked the door they would have pocketed the key not left it in lock. Sounds like bull to me.
The fact she is a highly regarded psychology professor at Stanford is interesting… I wish one of the questions she had received was what inspired her to go into psychology? I would bet she had many conversations with a psychologist when she went to college as she dealt with her own feelings of guilt, self worth, etc., and became interested in the human mind and helping people.

Is the judge from the Nasser trial in Michigan eligible for the Supreme Court because she has my vote as a tough, yet fair-minded judge who deserves to serve for life.
The only ones using Clinton to deflect are the ones who quite frankly are conspiracy idiots and cannot defend with a clear conscious this man. NO one who holds a high office should be above reproach – well at least it use too. If you watch and read her statement you wouldn’t be asking how she escaped. If he is such a honorable man – why are they rushing without a REAL investigation. Oh well now we will have TWO TAINTED SCJ. The GOP once again have shown their thoughts about women loud and clear. It speaks “WE DON’T CARE. His arrogance and lack of self control, not to mention his side swiping many of the questions proves without a doubt he is fit for that office or any office honestly.
^^HE IS NOT FIT^^
Typical victim blaming. If he is innocent and has nothing to hide then why in the world would he refuse to ask for an FBI investigation? The best way to clear his name and restore his “good reputation” is to have a full investigation into the matter by professionals who can track down all evidence and interview witnesses. He refused to ask for any further investigation. To me, that means he has something to hide. Doesn’t that bother you at all? Why do you want to appoint someone to a lifetime position who has no interest in seeking evidence that proves his innocence? Maybe because he is scared they will find all of his skeltons.
I love how people think his teenage years shouldn’t matter, but people are so willing to judge the women for what they did or didn’t do back then, or think the fact they have fuzzy memories means their statements are invalid. Kavanaugh didn’t deny during the hearing yesterday that he liked to drink back then, after all, and friends of his have acknowledged that he did drink too much from time to time. If people are willing to say, “How can these women possibly remember what happened 36 years ago?” why can’t that same argument apply to Kavanaugh’s memories from 36 years ago?
.
Also, can we drop the Clinton comparisons already? People do realize that there’s a lot of Democrats/liberals around today-people who were either too young during his presidency (*Raises hand*) or who were born in the mid to late ’90s/the year 2000 (the latest somebody could be born and be able to vote this year)-who don’t revere him, the way some who may have voted for him back then do, right? I guess my question for everyone who keeps saying, “But, but, Bill Clinton!” is this: If you think it was so wrong for the Democrats to ignore and dismiss the accusations against him (and I would fully agree on that)…why, exactly, are you willing to ignore and dismiss the accusations against Kavanaugh now? Or, for Trump supporters, why haven’t you shown any concern over the numerous accusations against him?
.
Like, seriously, people, you do realize that Democrats defending a guy accused of sexual assault twenty-some years back does not give you any sort of pass or justification for doing the same with a conservative politician now, right? Wouldn’t you guys want to prove you’re “better” than those questionable Democrats and not let that kind of thing slide in your party? Especially given how conservatives have spent the last few decades claiming they’re all about “Christian family values” and whatnot?
No one will ever know the actual complete truth of this situation. It’s unclear to me that even the participants know what the truth is.It is completely possible both Kavanaugh and Ford believe what they are saying is true and yet ultimately neither really is.There probably should be an investigation but the FBI has been so demonized that many will no longer trust whatever they might find or decide.
Mix years of time, childhood incidents, alcohol, politics, fear, peer pressures and shady acts of politicians and you get something that has no real answer.
Agreed. Watching both, I find it very hard to believe someone is outright lying. They both clearly believed what they were saying. Even if the FBI had a pristine reputation right now, they’d never be able to “solve” this case. All they’d be able to do is take witness statements, which is what Congress has done via testimony and sworn statements from various people that could be involved in the multiple allegations made public. It stinks, because we’ll never know the truth and this whole event has tainted everyone it’s touched forever.
Thank you for being the lone voice of reason ’round here. Everyone else has made up their minds based on bupkus and their own biases.
Dr. Ford is very credible. Brett should have demanded an FBI investigation to clear his name.
Yes, the world traveler who suddenly can’t fly to DC nor remember most of the facts to back up her potentially life ruining claim is “very credible.” Wait, that was sarcasm right?
Honestly, that’s your excuse? People who have a fear for flying (for any reason) are still going to fly if they have to. You can’t expect people to drive cross country like John Madden. They just get through it as best they can.
Didn’t she fly to D.C. from California for the hearing on Thursday or was that a computer-generated image of Dr. Ford in the senate hearings? A lot of people hate to fly but must do it for work or family purposes. Your argument is meaningless and has no merit. PS – Tequila shots at an airport bar can help before getting on a plane. ;)
Graham’s gotta point. Dr. Ford wanted to be anonymous in her report, but someone didn’t uphold that.
If she didn’t want it out there, why did she write the letter/ How naive are you?
Just addressing the fact that she wanted her name anonymous, so she and her family wouldn’t be harassed by people who don’t believe her. Wouldn’t you want to be anonymous if you asked?
If I’d kept it to myself for 36 years and didn’t want to be questioned about it now, I’d have kept it to myself now. Also, most teens keep diaries, and if that was an earth shattering experience, I’d have that date burned in my brain.
You =/= her.
Even if you still don’t believe that Kavanaugh is the one who attacked Ford, what is clear is the perjuries. I don’t know how anyone could have listened to Leahy’s statement, and not think ‘ya know what, you’re right, we can do better’. There’s no way that they don’t have some other candidate that fits their agenda that they would be happy to see become a justice. Stop trying to die on a hill that has been shrouded in controversy from the beginning. Yes, before the first hearing. This is all just causing us to look more and more ridiculous by the minute and it’s just… so sad.
And to all the R senators that are saying the FBI wouldn’t turn up anything different than what we already have, Ford already gave a clear hint as how to at least narrow down the timeline in her testimony yesterday. A lead that hasn’t been investigated yet that the impartial FBI (NOT the partial senate committee) could easily work on, not to mention interviewing all the people who have only done written statements. There’s a lot that could be done.
Whitehouse with the blown up calendar and saying things I yelled out while listening yesterday… *stands up and applauds*
I don’t know how anyone could have listened to Leahy’s statement, and not think ‘ya know what, you’re right, we can do better’. There’s no way that they don’t have some other candidate that fits their agenda that they would be happy to see become a justice.
.
This. There’s plenty of other potential judges they could find. They could look for a more centrist judge (you know, like Garland!) that could satisfy both parties. The fact that there’s a whole mess around Kavanaugh now makes it clear that it’d be better for the GOP to just cut him loose and go find somebody else.
.
Even if people believe Kavanaugh, keep in mind there’s also the fact that he’s only released a small section of stuff related to his history as a judge thus far. And we have no idea how he’d rule if worse came to worse and this whole Mueller investigation ended up before the Supreme Court. I’d really like some sort of guarantee that we won’t have somebody on the Supreme Court who could give Trump a pass on his role in any shady business related to that investigation (or any other crimes he commits in office, for that matter).
He is as crooked as the rest of the Republicans, shame on all of them, and shame on the people who were brainwashed.
He is simple not fit for this extremely important job that can ultimately affect all of us. End of story….
This is all about abortion. The democrats are terrified he will over turn roe even though he told them he wouldn’t .In fact he couldn’t even if he wanted to. This has been a shameful thing, the worst in 70 years. And to put that poor delusional woman through that. Democrats should hide.
He may not completely overhaul Roe v. Wade, but he could definitely support efforts that would slowly chip away at it.
.
But abortion isn’t the only concern here. As I noted above, where does he stand on the issue of a president being held accountable for any crimes they commit while in office? That’s kind of an important issue to consider as well, given the current Mueller investigation going on. And there’s other issues of importance to consider as well-healthcare, LGBT rights, etc.
.
That said, however, political views have no relevance to this particular investigation. You don’t have to be a liberal to be concerned about these accusations, after all, or support an investigation.
I don’t think it’s that surprising that he doesn’t want an FBI investigation, and it’s not just about guilt or innocence. It’s about leverage. We are almost a month away from the midterms. Let’s say the FBI investigates and finds something. So, then Kavanaugh’s out. But what if nothing is found? I’ve read about 3 day investigations, week-long investigations, and two-week investigations. However, if I’m Kavanaugh, how do I guarantee that clock? If I say “Sure, I’m down with the investigation,” nothing comes of the investigation but it takes longer than a month, are Democrats going to promise to vote for me even if nothing is revealed in the investigation? That’s not likely. I know Kavanaugh can’t authorize an investigation to occur, but i understand why he’s not gung-ho about one at this point in time. There’s some element of jeopardy for him whether the investigation comes back with more damaging information or whether it comes back with nothing. I wouldn’t expect anyone to be enthusiastically supportive of something where he or she could still lose a job that he or she wants even when no wrongdoing is found. Garland’s nomination was stalled, but he was never actively asked to support the events that stalled it. Taking the politics out of it, I’d think anyone would want to grab “the brass ring” sooner if they thought there was even the slightest possibility of it not being there later.
From CNN: “Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation was suddenly thrown into doubt Friday as Senate Republicans called for a one-week delay so that the FBI can investigate sexual assault allegations facing President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.”
