A former president of the Ulster Farmers Union has passed away.

Aughnacloy man Walter Elliott, who was awarded the OBE for services to farming, died suddenly at his home on Sunday.

Mr Elliott, a farmer, was UFU president during the BSE crisis, one of the most difficult periods for beef farmers in Northern Ireland. He was considered a leading figure in agriculture for many years, and had also been a Justice of the Peace.

Posting online, one friend paid tribute to "an outstanding gentleman" who "was so humble and helpful to all who had the pleasure of knowing him".

He added: "His kindness is something I will never forget.

"May his memory live on and be an example to us all."

Mr Elliott was pre-deceased by his wife Jean, and is survived by his son Jonathan, daughter-in-law Sue and granddaughters Charlotte and Lucy.

His funeral will take place at 2.30pm this afternoon at St James' Church, Aughnacloy, followed by interment in the adjoining churchyard.
