Trump discusses North Korea with France’s Macron

President Trump on Saturday spoke on a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron about the evolving crisis in North Korea, according to a White House press release.

A readout of the call released Saturday afternoon states that Trump and Macron spoke about North Korea, and committed to enforcing the new sanctions passed by the United Nations last week.

“President Trump and President Macron pledged to work together with allies and partners to enforce United Nations sanctions and achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” the transcript reads.

“President Trump reiterated to President Macron the United States’ commitment to stop the North Korean nuclear menace,” it adds.

The White House statement importantly notes that Trump has not yet ruled out a military solution to North Korea’s nuclear threat. On Friday, he tweeted that America’s military remains “locked and loaded” in the region.

“President Trump stated that the United States is ready, along with its allies, to apply the full range of diplomatic, economic, and military measures to achieve that goal.”

Trump has sought to de-escalate the conflict in recent days. Late Friday night, he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the North Korean situation, who urged him to show “restraint.”

“Hopefully it will all work out,” Trump said late Friday. “Nobody loves a peaceful solution more than President Trump, that I can tell you … But we will see what happens. We think that lots of good things could happen, and we could also have a bad solution.”
